Tuesday, April 6, 2004: Kennel Management

PHMorgan: Welcome to BreedER Chat!

PHMorgan: Topic tonight is: Kennel Management

PHFlea: Ohhhhhh good topic!!

enyates_nr: ........well, it is my first time there

bert_nr: I don't have a kennel I have a trailer

enyates_nr: I mean here

PHMorgan: LOL

enyates_nr: I dont have either

PHFlea: Bert in your case...."Trailer Management"

enyates_nr: .....but i do have a dog

PHMorgan: Well at some point in owning and breeding dogs, you have to develop some system for coping with all of them

PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat! Topic tonight is: Kennel Management

bert_nr: Guess we could call my bedroom a kennelroom since that's where we all sleep

PHMorgan: As soon as you have more than one dog, you have to begin thinking about crates, yards, containment and cleanup

yarnell_nr: I have a kennel 30 x45

enyates_nr: ..........what do we say about kennel management??

PHMorgan: The first sign of trouble at my house was when my husband didn't have to mow all summer....

PHMorgan: Becuase we had NO GRASS....

yarnell_nr: It is a full time job trying to keep it clean

PHMorgan: The house was full of mud, dust and the dogs were always dirty

PHMorgan: I never wanted a kennel, but there was simply no choice

bert_nr: We are just starting into mud season..... hate it

enyates_nr: ...........so who picks the topic here??

PHMorgan: It kept the yard cleaner, the dogs cleaner, and gave me back my YARD so I can have company

PHMorgan: We usualy all agree the week before, Enyates

enyates_nr: oh

PHMorgan: Or, sometimes I pick it

PHMorgan: This was chosen last week

yarnell_nr: what do yu clean your kennel with

enyates_nr: then why is it that no one here really is talking about kennels???

PHMorgan: I have a sprayer and I use an enzymatic disinfectant

PHMorgan: En - we are talking about kennel MANAGEMENT

PHMorgan: You are welcome to participate, or you are welcome to find a chat more suited to your interests

yarnell_nr: do you disinfect your runs everyday

bert_nr: Also different people are here every week

PHMorgan: I try to do it every week in the summer

enyates_nr: well, I do want to talk about dogs, but I dont have a keennel.....and I dont kennel my dog..

PHMorgan: In the winter I am VERY lax

PHMorgan: But my kennel is gravel based, not concrete

PHMorgan: It's messier, but better for the dog's feet

PHMorgan: Yarn - what do you use to clean yours?

PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat! Topic tonight is: Kennel Management

Minuet: Hi

bert_nr: Actually I do have a couple kennel runs. I started out with gravel with welded wire under

yarnell_nr: my inside run has concrete and outside pea gravel

PHMorgan: Bert - me too - my guys LOVE to dig

PHFlea: Hi Minuet!!

PHMorgan: They don't want OUT, they just want HOLES and MUD

bert_nr: Had my one bitch dig out and go missing for 18 hours.

PHMorgan: Oh dear - that must have been scary

bert_nr: Bricked her run.

PHFlea: Hi Rueger!!

Minuet: Hi Rue!

yarnell_nr: is use pressure washer inside and disenfect outside with deluited pinesol

Rueger: Howdy

bert_nr: The other I built wooden pallets for which worked very well until I kept my friends GSD

PHMorgan: We have a small kennel and a large dogyard which is also gravel. That way I have a separate place for bitches in season. I could rotate, but this is much easier- especially when I'm trying to get out to door for work!

bert_nr: At this point I have one bricked and two with patio blocks

PHMorgan: Yarn - my dogs cannot tolerate pinesol - it has too strong an odor - I use an odorless cleaner

PHFlea: Morgan...do you find gravel easier to clean up??

PHMorgan: Bert -I think the bricking and patio blocks are better than plain concrete because they DO give

bert_nr: I use bleach and water

PHMorgan: Flea - not at ALL!

Rueger: I like parvolan for a cleaner

PHMorgan: But it's better for the dog's feet

Rueger: I also have patio blocks in my interior runs with gravel and wood chips in outside runs some of each*

PHMorgan: Dogs kept on concrete (with no other surfaces) can often have splayed feet, flattened toes and poor posture in general

yarnell_nr: my dogs cannot get out we have six inches of concrete between the run and I think that our fencing is 11 gauge

bert_nr: I would have preferred to keep the gravel but more than that I wanted to keep my dogs

PHMorgan: I know how *I* feel after standing on concrate for too long....

PHFlea: Second that one Morgan

PHMorgan: Feet is one of my personal pet peeves....

bert_nr: My dogs are rarely in the runs though.

yarnell_nr: My dogs have thick rubber pads that are 4x6 on the inside runs

PHMorgan: What about the concrete, Yarnell -how much time do your dogs spend on it? Do you think it affects them?

PHMorgan: LOL - good solution, Yarn - my guys had those, too. They ate them

PHFlea: Plus not to mention jumping up and down on concrete will eventually be hard on there joints with the shock

yarnell_nr: They are never on the concrete

PHMorgan: I have a huge plywood platform in my dogyard, as well, so they have somewhere to lay that isn't rocky - also they don't potty on it so it's clean

bert_nr: Did you use the ones they use for horse stalls?? Can't believe they ate those

yarnell_nr: these are stall mats and there is no way for them to pick them up

PHMorgan: Bert - I haven't seen those - where would you get them?

PHMorgan: maybe I need to look into that....

bert_nr: Any tractor or farm supply place.

PHMorgan: Is the matting easy to clean?

bert_nr: Hoses off.

PHMorgan: Bert - that could be interesting - I live outside Philadelpiha... LOL

Rueger: Morgan also you can order from places like jeffers

yarnell_nr: you can get them at the feed store

Rueger: very easy to clean Morgan you just hose them off

PHMorgan: I will havae to check that out... I woudl not mind concrete if I had something like that on it

PHMorgan: How are they prevented from picking it up?

bert_nr: Yah, that's what the farm supply place is. a feed store.

PHMorgan: Maybe I'm not picturing it properly

Rueger: and you can get perforated for drainage or solid

Rueger: Morgan they weigh a ton LOL

PHMorgan: Bert - there are no feed stores around her e- I would have to order them

PHFlea: Oh I have seen the perforated kind

bert_nr: It's very heavy about 1/2" thick

PHMorgan: 1/2 inch? They'd eat it

PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat! Topic tonight is: Kennel Management

PHFlea: Morgan they would have them closer to the Amish area......

yarnell_nr: I have most of the entire building covered with mats. I don't want them jumping down from the grooming table on to the concrete

Rueger: no this stuff is way to hard to eat

PHMorgan: The ones I had were 1" and I could not lift them alone

PHMorgan: They ate them

PHFlea: Hi Sheka!!

PHMorgan: I will avhe to look at them

sheka_nr: hi

PHMorgan: Thanks for the ida

PHMorgan: OK - so what kind of sprayer does everyone use for their cleaner? I've tried several and hate them ALL

PHMorgan: They don't ahve enough power, or they don't distribute the cleaner properly

Rueger: Morgan even Johnny who ate a deck support can not eat those LOL

Rueger: I use a small electric power washer

yarnell_nr: This is what I have in my building tub sink refrig hot water heater fans aircondition and heaters food bins etc

Rueger: it is from sears it cost under 100 and cleans everything great

PHMorgan: Sounds awesome, Yarn

PHMorgan: My dogs are crated in my laundry room

PHMorgan: We call it the pointer apartments

PHMorgan: They are stacked 2 high

PHMorgan: The upper dogs have to learn to wait to get out until I can help them down - they can certainly JUMP, but I don't htink it's good for them

Rueger: I have a building with food room, and runs with indoor and outdoor runs to them all it is heated and air conditioned

Rueger: seperate building for grooming though so no hot water in kennel

PHMorgan: Sounds lovely

PHMorgan: I wish I had more room here so I could build a separate dog room

PHFlea: Morgan that has got to be a strain on your back....lifting them down all the time

yarnell_nr: I use to laugh when I heard Tammy Faye had an aircondition dog house and here i have air condition building lol'

Rueger: I would not be able to do that with my guys anymore and my dogs are small compared to MOrgans LOL

yarnell_nr: do any of you have kennel help

PHFlea: <-------Not going to mention that Flea his little quaters outside with his own window and flowerboxes

PHMorgan: No, flea - we kinda "pour" them down - just help them so they don't hit with all their weight.

Rueger: if you call my mom playing with the dogs help then yes

PHMorgan: Aw

PHFlea: Rueger you slave driver

yarnell_nr: I have a 13 yr old girl and she is just wonderful with the dogs. good cleaner also

PHMorgan: Well, my dogyard has flower boxes and two trellises with climbing roses on it....LOL

Rueger: yeah that is me LOL

PHFlea: Yarnell is she a volunteer or do you pay her??

yarnell_nr: we have 2 acres fenced so the dogs get out everday to run

Rueger: I want a volunteer LOL

yarnell_nr: I pay her 7 an hours she is the third child from the same family that has been with me over the past five years

Rueger: oh good deal yarnell

PHFlea: Rueger.....around here children love to volunteer with animals....they all want to grow up to be vets

yarnell_nr: they have two younger ones that will take her place when she is 16

PHMorgan: That is wonderful, yarn. My kennel help is live-in - my daughter

Rueger: around here all the kids live on farms and avoid working with animals LOL

PHFlea: Do any of you board for people with your crew??

yarnell_nr: one thing that i have is a file cabinet that open and all the shelves pull out. that is where i keep all my grooming stuff

yarnell_nr: no boarding here

Rueger: I used to Flea many years ago and it was just too dangerous to me I was aafraid my own dogs would pick up something from the boarders

bert_nr: I don't board but I have kept dogs for friends or rescue groups occassionally

PHMorgan: I do not board

PHMorgan: What about bitches in season - what kinds of provisions do you all have for that?

Rueger: brb

yarnell_nr: i also have a lick in each pen so that the dogs have fresh water at all times it works great

PHFlea: Lick?? is that a bottle

Tim_nr: Hi

PHFlea: Hi Tim!!

PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat! Topic tonight is: Kennel Management

PHMorgan: I have a 5 gallon bucket I fill 2x a day

Tim_nr: How's everyone?

bert_nr: I used to only have bitches so it wasn't a problem

yarnell_nr: no it is a spicket that is attached to a galvanize pipe and everytime they lick it fresh water comes out

PHMorgan: But they usually don't drink much outside - they prefer the inside waterbowl. They just play in teh bucket

PHFlea: Yarnell...does it freeze ever?

bert_nr: Currently I have two males, one is only a year old so he's still ignorant

PHFlea: Hi Icey!!

yarnell_nr: no because i run the heat in the winter time.

Tim_nr: What kind of dogs are we talking here?

yarnell_nr: Saints

bert_nr: Samoyeds

PHMorgan: Bert -0 you are FOOLING yourself! LOL

Tim_nr: Does anyone own a Bichon?

PHFlea: Nope

bert_nr: Well, I currently only have on entire bitch his dam and she's not due back in until June

Tim_nr: Thanks.

PHMorgan: LOL

bert_nr: Tally my older male is one of the good ones to live with . He's only interested when they're READY.

iceywhite_huskies_nr: hey every1

bert_nr: hey Icey....

iceywhite_huskies_nr: hey

yarnell_nr: since i have very few puppies when a bitch comes in season i put her in the puppy pens which is near the house and away from the kennel

iceywhite_huskies_nr: ne1 show dogs??

PHMorgan: Sounds workable

PHMorgan: What about puppies - Yarn has separate pens - what about everyone else?

PHMorgan: I put mine in with the adults - they are very good with them

bert_nr: I whelp in my spare room......... use the hallway for an exercise area until they're big enough to go out on the deck.

bert_nr: EVERYone lives together

yarnell_nr: i am not able to do that i can't put a 15 lb pup with 175 dog lol my puppy pen is 15x20

PHFlea: Yarnell you have Saints right??

yarnell_nr: yes

PHMorgan: Yarn - my adults come and go in the puppy box as early as 3-4 weeks so long as momdog doesn't mind.

iceywhite_huskies_nr: any1 from TN

bert_nr: Sammies are very careful of pups and little dogs

PHMorgan: So it's not a problem to put them out with adults at 8 weeks or so

PHFlea: Yarnell....you reminded me of my friend who breeds Saints.....her litter of 13pups...poor mom

bert_nr: It the ones like Sir that are young and ignorant you have to be careful of. He was playing with a litter of 8 week old Sammies this weekend though and was very good with them

bert_nr: I'm in PA

PHMorgan: Aw

yarnell_nr: i know that they would not mean to hurt the pup but some of mine are just to big and silly

PHMorgan: What about exercising? How does everyoen keep multiple dogs in shape>

yarnell_nr: what do you use for flies

bert_nr: Normally we go for walks, dogs loose in the farmland behind me or hikes, dogs on lead

yarnell_nr: i have 2 acres fenced and they get out to run everday sometime two at a time and sometimes four.

bert_nr: then there's agiltiy classes and obedience and sledding and weightpull LOL

PHFlea: Morgan I like the good ole game of chase the tennis ball

PHMorgan: We don't get a lot of flies, but fly bait works pretty well.

PHMorgan: WE have to drive to our gun club to RUN them, but I bike them at home

bert_nr: I have a bait horse

iceywhite_huskies_nr: i let mine pull me on a skate board or roller blades

PHFlea: Icey do you sled with yours??

iceywhite_huskies_nr: lol, i have no snow to train them on

PHFlea: Awwww then that would be tough

PHMorgan: I have one who keeps herself in condition doing pogo stick imitations in the dogyard... LOL

yarnell_nr: does anyone have any problems with field mice or snakes

iceywhite_huskies_nr: but they know the same commands, some of mine pull carts

PHFlea: Morgan....lolol that is too funny

iceywhite_huskies_nr: yeah, my 4 month old pup does that, ALOT

PHFlea: Yarnell why would you have snakes??

yarnell_nr: yes we have copper head and cotton mouth

yarnell_nr: killed a few last summer

PHFlea: eeeeeeekkkkk not coming to visit you then

yarnell_nr: sorry but i just chopped their heads off

iceywhite_huskies_nr: Lol

PHFlea: No problems up here with snakes...only thing I have in my yard is itty bitty garter snakes

PHFlea: I do have a problem with chipmunks...no field mice

bert_nr: We do have copperheads in Pa but mainly in the mountains and down around Pittsburgh area

iceywhite_huskies_nr: birds are always in my pens, i guess eatin the dog food

PHMorgan: We do NOT have any here, thanks goodness

PHMorgan: WE don't get birds - the dogs eat them

yarnell_nr: i will be right back my old mac wants to go out

bert_nr: I have a cat named Bonzai who handles the vermin problem for me.

iceywhite_huskies_nr: i got a cat too, well a kitten it can sit in the palm of uyour hand

bert_nr: Only problem with Bonzai is that she likes to feed the dogs

PHFlea: <-----making mental notes.....not visiting Yarnell, Bert

PHMorgan: IF I had a separate kennel buliding I owuld have a cat

iceywhite_huskies_nr: yeah, they can get parvo from that

PHMorgan: Just to keep the critters out

bert_nr: Parvo from what??

PHFlea: Cats are great for vermin....I know up here they are always looking for people to take in the ferals for there barns

iceywhite_huskies_nr: eatin cat poop, lol

PHFlea: Hi Mow!!

iceywhite_huskies_nr: hey mow

PHMorgan: Yes - we have a program in PA for that

PHFlea: Cat's don't have parvo.......

PHMowgli: hey Flea

bert_nr: HUH??? I'm lost

iceywhite_huskies_nr: i know, but the vet told us that they carrie it like from birds, and a dog can get it from them

PHMorgan: A friend wanted to get one, but she has to wait until her old kitty dies - he's an inside outside kitty (NOT a mouser) but has no claws so goes and gets himself beat up by any other cats by starting fights he cannot finish... LOL

iceywhite_huskies_nr: lol

bert_nr: I thnk the vet meant Coccidia

PHMowgli: I'm lost too LOL

iceywhite_huskies_nr: whats that??

PHFlea: You can get worms from vermin......from the fleas

PHMowgli: and mice carry leptospirosis

bert_nr: I think it's a bacteria .... cause diaherra

iceywhite_huskies_nr: he said Parvo, and he told the same thing to some friends of mine, that had a dog die from it

PHMowgli: Parvo from birds?

PHFlea: Must be lepto.....Morgan correct me here but parvo is only transported canine to canine

iceywhite_huskies_nr: i dunno, its just what the vet told us

PHMowgli: Flea from all I know just canine to canine for Parvo

PHFlea: Also...parvo is a puppy disease...rarely an adult dog gets it

PHMorgan: I do not know, Flea

PHFlea: brb gonna do some research

PHMorgan: But lots of diseases are transmitted jsut by other animal feces, even if the animal cannot be "infected"

iceywhite_huskies_nr: yeah, most of the time its puppy, my friends dog was around a yr old, but i dunno how long she had it ,before she dies

bert_nr: Older dogs or dogs with compromised immune systems can get Parvo too

PHMorgan: Either way, it's a good idea to keep your kennel, yard and dog area clean

PHMowgli: although I would have to assume there is the possibility that pretty much any animal even a human can carry the parvo to a canine through shoes, feet, feces and other forms of transport

iceywhite_huskies_nr: yeah i agree

PHFlea: I stand corrected here

PHFlea: Although not airborne, Parvo is highly contagious and extremely hardy. Puppies and dogs can contract the parvovirus and never leave their yards. The virus can last 9 months or longer in soil or it can be brought to your dog on your shoes, hands, and even car tires. Birds invading the dog's food dish can also be a culprit. Even puppies that have been vaccinated for parvo can contract the virus.

yarnell_nr: you are correct and that is why i never go to dog shows when i have puppies

PHFlea: Got that from the Parvoguard vaccine website

iceywhite_huskies_nr: good info i guess

yarnell_nr: enjoyed the topic see you next week

PHMorgan: See ya next week yarn
