Transcript: Dog Breeding Chat Tuesday, August 3, 2004: Software for Breeders PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat! Our topic tonight is Software for Breeders! PHMorgan: So? How many of you use the computer to keep track of your dogs' records/pedigrees? bert_nr: Muirgen's grandma used to kill snakes bert_nr: I wish............. :-( GAChesters: I do Morgan.... I use Breeders Assistant PHMorgan: What features does that have, GAC? I've not used that one travlinpom_nr: I use Breeders Standard for pedigrees . . . have a HUGE database GAChesters: It does way more than I utilize Morgan.....but basically I use the ped program, trial matings and inbreeding coefficients PHMorgan: I use that, too,k Trav GAChesters: I also use it's .html tab for pedigrees for my website PHMorgan: TBS (the Breeders Standard) also tracks performance records, training records, mating records, prints AKC Litter reports, etc. bert_nr: Sounds too complicated for me PHMorgan: Also keeps owner/breeder contact list GAChesters: Yea Morgan.....this has all that too but I don't use it lol PHMorgan: IT's not - very easy to use or not use whatever floats your boat PHMorgan: TBS also keeps track of TRAITS. You can list and create traits taht you want to keep track of travlinpom_nr: Morgan, yep, and i dont use any of that . . . i use the crystal ball for genetics though GAChesters: Traits? GAChesters: Mine has a nice little area for notes that I use on occasion too PHMorgan: Trats: Colors, body shapes, temperament - whatever you like bert_nr: short tails ..........big ears....... that type of thing GAChesters: aaaah ok sorta like my notes area GAChesters: gotcha PHMorgan: TBS also keeps health records, and can be used as a board kennel software bert_nr: board kennel software? GAChesters: boarding kennel I think bert_nr: As in a boarding kennel bert_nr: ? bert_nr: left the ? behind GAChesters: LOL bert PHMorgan: Yesk, Boarding. Sorry PHMorgan: Fingers are NOT cooperating PHMorgan: SEe? GAChesters: LOL Morgan bert_nr: I kinda liked the yesk.......... makes you sound Russian PHMorgan: OK - so tell me more about the Breeders Assistant? PHMorgan: WERY WUssion GAChesters: javohl GAChesters: It's a nice enough program,my only gripe is that I can't e-mail pedigrees in a boxed format GAChesters: they end up very hard to read so I generally just throw it on my website bert_nr: My dogs are Russian they don't say javohl they say arrrrrrrrrooooooo bert_nr: Oh I know what you mean someone sent me one and it was all jumbled GAChesters: yea bert that's maddening.....especially trial pedigrees bert_nr: What a pain. Even when you know some of the dogs in the pedigree it's next to impossible to sort out GAChesters: Right. That's my biggest gripe with it, but I can always print and scan one and send it that way too GAChesters: Hi Mow! PHMowgli: hey bert_nr: There's that little hamster again when is she going to get a sheltie?? PHMowgli: hi Morgan, bert, trav, cclover bert_nr: >VBEG< GAChesters: I like the neonate sheltie bert........LOL GAChesters: oops lost Morgan bert_nr: My sammies would LOVE that little critter to death PHMowgli: ha ha GAChesters: Mine too bert! PHMowgli: so would mine LOL PHMowgli: they would raise it up to be a sheltie PHMorgan: Alrighty then GAChesters: wb Morgan! bert_nr: She's back SHE"S BACK!! PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeders Chat! Topic tonight is SOFTWARE PHMorgan: Hi MOw bert_nr: sorry I excite easily PHMowgli: WB bert_nr: Are you telling yourself that Morgan"?? bert_nr: I'll try to behave now...........sigh PHMowgli: so what types of software has everyone tried? GAChesters: It's good to have "moments" bert. PHMorgan: :::Waving the duct tape threateningly::: GAChesters: So who has puppies?? PHMowgli: at who morgan? PHMowgli: not me PHMorgan: We were just discussing (before I was rudely dumped offline) the merits of TBS and Breeders Assistant bert_nr: We had a golden for awhile too PHMorgan: No... Bert is ducking, see? GAChesters: I got a small brag..I think it's a brag anyway PHMowgli: I use mans best friend PHMorgan: GO for it, GAC! PHMorgan: We LOVE brags GAChesters: My boy, Beau has become a first time Papa!!! bert_nr: Yippee !! GAChesters: 3 babies......2 girls and a boy PHMowgli: yeah beau PHMorgan: Man's Best Friend is the same as The Breeders Standard, which I've now shortened to TBS... LOL PHMorgan: Hooray - congrats to him! GAChesters: I am so excited for her---as much as if they were here PHMorgan: And no messy papers at YOUR hosue! PHMorgan: Even better! PHMorgan: Will you be choosing a stud puppy? GAChesters: Darn skippy Morgan....I got to cell phone whelp PHMorgan: Hoohoo! bert_nr: I love raising pups........... hate whelping them GAChesters: No, I will take stud fee as she wishes to build her line PHMorgan: Altho I prefer to be hands on..... GAChesters: ME TOO Bert PHMorgan: I love whelping PHMorgan: With a cooperative bitch bert_nr: It's the stress and worry PHMorgan: Then I don't want ot see them until they are about 3 months old.... PHMowgli: I like whelpingand puppies I hate c-sections PHMorgan: Let Momdog do all that crap GAChesters: I like them at about 3 weeks bert_nr: About something maybe going wrong GAChesters: From 3-8 weeks they are so fun PHMorgan: I dont' worry because I know when stuff is going wrong and I trust my vet implicitly bert_nr: Sammies look like white rats when born PHMorgan: Pointers look like guinea pigs PHMowgli: shelties look like hamsters with tails bert_nr: I'm sorta out of the way and it's not a quick trip to a vet from here PHMorgan: OK - so how many pedigrees does everyone have saved on their software??? PHMorgan: I think I"m at about 500 by now GAChesters: I dunno Morgan lemme look bert_nr: NONE......... I've got no software yet PHMorgan: Better get on teh stick, Bert! LOL PHMowgli: I have 25,687 dogs GAChesters: 687 PHMowgli: pedigree's are limitless LOL GAChesters: dang Mow.....all shelties? PHMorgan: That is quite a lot... PHMowgli: yeah PHMorgan: I've got some ridgebacks and poodles in mine, too that I did for friends bert_nr: There was a letter that I sent to a Sammie list about a month ago about TBS archiving all the pedigrees from it's program and selling them to other breeders PHMorgan: Did all the breeders get a CUT? PHMowgli: mine are all shelties in my collie base I have 10429 dogs GAChesters: the 687 are all on my own too....Manchester ppl don't share a whole lot unfortunately PHMorgan: THEY did all the WORK bert_nr: Nope.......... it's "their" software PHMorgan: Uh-huh PHMorgan: Catch me sending my pedigrees to them PHMowgli: I have to admit a bunch of us sheltie got together and traded files s we all had less work on building our base bert_nr: Apparently if you use their software they can capture your pedigrees GAChesters: supposedly there's a lady in Canada who did a program and has a huge Manchester database for sale, but mostly it's canadian pedigrees + dogs GAChesters: dang bert that's not right bert_nr: Are there only the two programs available? PHMorgan: I thik there are more PHMowgli: no tons of software programs GAChesters: There are lots of other ones bert_nr: No it's not and it caused a BIG ruckus on the pedigrees list GAChesters: Just I don't know what all or who all uses them GAChesters: I bet! bert_nr: I never heard what they found out. Some who had bought TBS were going to contact the sellers PHMowgli: I have tried compuped, and so many others but TBS is my preferred PHMowgli: I have tried seperate programs for co-efficients and colors but I prefer TBS PHMorgan: What did you like better about TBS than compuped? I'm only versed in TBS PHMowgli: well compuped is more difficult to understand PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeders Chat! Topic tonight is SOFTWARE GAChesters: I have heard compu ped is not so user friendly PHMorgan: How so, Mow? PHMowgli: and also you have to copy each dog to a new pedigree where you tbs if sire is same all dogs in his ped move with him PHMowgli: with compuped when you put say Merlin as sire I have to add in g-pa and gr-g-pa etc etc PHMorgan: THa tis a PAIN mhellie55: Hi everybody PHMowgli: yep and once you save the ped if you say repeat the breeding to sisters who are littermates you can't just switch out the dams you have to re-do the whole ped PHMowgli: hey mhellie GAChesters: oh ick Mow....Breeder's Assistant auto fills in ancestry if it knows it GAChesters: hey mhellie PHMowgli: Iknow GAC LOL PHMorgan: THat's way too much work. TBS is very easy to create pedigrees and repeat stuff GAChesters: Have you used Breeder's Assistant Mow? bert_nr: gotta go check the fish.......... brb mhellie55: I'm not a breeder, but I'm not sure if I know enough about software. PHMorgan: THat's OK PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeders Chat! Topic tonight is SOFTWARE PHMowgli: who makes it GAC? mhellie55: This is my firt time in this chat room. GAChesters: Hi Val GAChesters: Tenset Mow PHMowgli: I prolly havethen cause I have a tenset program here GAChesters: I wish I could search for any dog with a certain ancestor tho...that'd be nice PHMowgli: you can do that on mans best friend or TS PHMowgli: TBS VAL911K9: hi everyone PHMorgan: Yes, you can PHMowgli: hi val PHMowgli: I like that cause I can see how many dogs in a ped all go back to same dog way back GAChesters: Well I should have bought that program then instead. Oh well GAChesters: Not gonna fork over the $$ AGAIN tho PHMorgan: It's so worht it, tho PHMorgan: I really love it PHMowgli: yeah they are all expensive I wonder why that is VAL911K9: are you talking about software that is only for breeding records or also includes show records to help keep track of judges etc? GAChesters: I think because it's such a speciality item and you only buy it once.....no add ons PHMowgli: val all of the above all software PHMowgli: you can get some software for free also and they are pretty programs just not able to do everything with them VAL911K9: ok - I want to buy but have no idea which one since show records are the most important for me right now GAChesters: My next big purchase needs to be a universal microchip scanner......new ped program is pretty far down on the list bert_nr: Any pedigree program is down on my list bert_nr: It's good to learn all about them here though PHMowgli: Val I did try to get different programs for different things I used most but you will be happier in long run ifyou just get one good program to do ti all for life PHMowgli: now willowind dals has a free pedigree software that is easy to use and free if you all you want is peds VAL911K9: Mowgli thats what I was thinking - would want it later on so get it all now PHMorgan: The Breeders Standard keeps track of show records. GAChesters: Val I keep a book of judges names + shows like an adress book and write it down PHMorgan: And it's pretty easy to use, plus it keeps track of lots of OTHER records, too PHMorgan: And you can edit it to suit for certain functions VAL911K9: Chesters thats what I do now - would like it on computer so can look up judges names etc when in motel with the laptop GAChesters: I still need hard copy tho Val...LOL Don't totally trust my puter PHMowgli: val I have my rpogram in both my laptop and desktop so I can ook up judges at shows too GAChesters: I like paper sometimes......LOL and I take my little red book with me to shows bert_nr: I'd like a list of judges that don't just put out their favorite handler of the month GAChesters: My friends look at it too and make notes PHMowgli: and GAC I don't keep hard copy but I backup disks after each show addition LOL GAChesters: LOL GAChesters: I also write down the judges that will use my breed in the group VAL911K9: I always keep either backups or paper copies so thats not a problem PHMowgli: yeah it is scary how one crash or virus can wipe us out LOL GAChesters: no kidding Mow. But usually we all gather around the "book" at shows and go page by page with friends who make notes in it for me also PHMowgli: when I got sasser I had to re-program my computer I was so thankful I back up everything PHMorgan: I do keep most of my pedigrees in paper AND Computer PHMorgan: And I backup all my stuff regularly GAChesters: I sometimes make personal notes about exhibitors and judges tho so I gotta be careful who reads it.....LOL PHMowgli: yeah gac I do that too LOL GAChesters: Like when I noted that my friend bent over in her WAY too tight skirt and we could see her underpants.....LOL I don't want her reading that particular page bert_nr: Oooo, had a friend do that in the ring and we told her while she was still in the ring. VAL911K9: LOL- thi8nk there are quite a few that have given that view to a judge GAChesters: wb Pom GAChesters: I tried to tell her that bert but she got pist at me bert_nr: She was giving that view to the ringside GAChesters: So now I don't say a word......if she wants to flash the judge--her deal.....LOL bert_nr: LOL......... in that case ........?? was it intentional GAChesters: I don't think so bert bert_nr: Then she should have thanked you travlinpom_nr: hey again GAChesters: Val you a K-9 cop? bert_nr: I would have GAChesters: Just hit me your name.....911 K-9 LOL VAL911K9: nope- train and show rotties & french mastiffs and was a 911 dispatcher GAChesters: aaaaaah ok kewl bert_nr: Just got a call about a young rottie with "issues" today VAL911K9: really bert - what kind of issues? bert_nr: 8 wks old and biting. bert_nr: Friend who called me has been working with him and has gotten him past that she used to train GSD VAL911K9: bert - that is normal a nice high drive pup will be very mouthy VAL911K9: just do normal things - sub a toy and do the "ouch" when teeth touch skin bert_nr: brb..........now they want out PHMorgan: It's a good time to get a handle on it, tho. NOw rather than later VAL911K9: yeah - hard to stop it later - my one high drive French Nastiff got me in the face real bad when she was 12 weeks old PHMorgan: CHARMING VAL911K9: LOL- she is my top bitch now Ch & working titles GAChesters: dang. I don't think I'd like that muchly VAL911K9: only french mastiff at this time to hold ARC carting titles with high in trial wins VAL911K9: oh she and I had a discussion about putting her mouth on me right when it happened PHMowgli: I am not sure I wuld want a mastiff even at 12 weeks biting my face bert_nr: The owners were scared to death of this baby . He would come right after them if they tried to pick something off the floor or to correct him GAChesters: I have "Come to God" meetings also, but my guys are toy dogs and luckily have trouble getting me above my kneecaps......LOLOL VAL911K9: well partially my fault - worked her to long - one and only time I had to grab her by the jowls and thump her butt on the ground while we had that come ot God talk PHMowgli: my dogs would never put their mouths on me unless it was to give kisses travlinpom_nr: GAC, yep, big difference isnt it? geez, i can break up a stud dog fight by picking both of them up by the back of the neck at that same time . . . try that with a Mastiff . . . lol bert_nr: They're doing better with Sue's help but have reached a where do we go from here point. I meet them/him next week GAChesters: HAHA I hear ya Pom! My hub says he's skert of me when I do that PHMorgan: Going to Jesus meetings are often useful for our flashy young busy dogs VAL911K9: bert- good luck I find that at this point they need to do obedience with some long downs sitting next to the pup to start getting control PHMorgan: Especially those uppity show pups we all LOVE to have with all the attitude GAChesters: LOLOL We were just talking about Ross Morgan....LOLOL VAL911K9: yeah Morgon - it can be a handful having a 100 plus lb chow dog with attitude VAL911K9: oops meant show dog VAL911K9: bert also with a rottie pup I usually prefer to start off right away with a Volhard style training collar bert_nr: Obedience is what Sue has been helping them with VAL911K9: so since I missed the first part of this chat - has anyone used the breeders standard software and was it pretty easy to set up? bert_nr: I suggested they try for a CGC in another month as a test PHMorgan: VAL _ it most ceratinly can PHMorgan: Been there, done that' PHMorgan: Altho NOT MY OWN. THey are not permitted to be brats PHMorgan: VAL _ yes I have and it's GREAT GREAT GREAT PHMorgan: Mow likes it too VAL911K9: bert- I start pups doing 20 minute down stays with me sitting next to them when they are 10 weeks old PHMowgli: I love CGC's PHMowgli: and I hate to interrupt conversatin but we need to get a topic for next week too VAL911K9: well I did a big no-no and can't find one of my files so lost track of points on my one boy and being they are shown in rare breed it's hard to get confirmation on his total points VAL911K9: I have to buy some software so if I misplace a file again will be covered GAChesters: folks I gotta go..nite and thanks for a great chat PHMowgli: nite CAG PHMowgli: GAC even GAChesters: LOL nite all PHMorgan: We do//// SUGGESTIONS???????????????? PHMowgli: so any ideas? VAL911K9: not from me LOL PHMorgan: Let's talk about Defining the pick puppy VAL911K9: Mow any suggestions as to where to buy the software from? PHMowgli: well we could maybe discuss researcrching pedigree's VAL911K9: that is a good subject bert_nr: Puppy Puzzle? PHMowgli: ValI like mans best friend whish is TBS PHMowgli: hey all good ideas write them down morgan PHMorgan: OK - gotta run. see Ya'll next week.
