Transcript: Dog Breeding Chat Tuesday, March 9, 2004: Evaluating Toplines and Feet PHMorgan: Haroo folks Purball: darn military PHMorgan: What dog is supposed to GROW Out of being a baddog? Purball: woof woof meeeeeeeeeeoooooowwwwwww! Purball: lol Purball: tuffy's tuffy_nr: this is my first dog and I'm trying PHFlea: Hi Morgan!! Purball: well, someone told 'er that Deerhounds: Tuffy, what breed is it? PHMorgan: What is Mr. Hairy pants doing? Purball: well, keep it up Tuffy, it's never easy with the first one!! we're here for ya! tuffy_nr: American Eskimo Purball: ooooo Deerhounds: Tuffy, absolutely! It's great that you are asking for ideas on this! tuffy_nr: thanks PHMorgan: :::pullls out all doggy be-good books and arranges them in front of her:::: PHMorgan: What is he doing? Purball: Beautiful dogs though tuffy!! congrats... age? Sex? name? tuffy_nr: any advice on how to start now on this problem? Deerhounds: folks, I have to talk to someone for a moment, I'll be back in a few minutes! tuffy_nr: 8 months male Tuffy PHMorgan: Tuffy - what is the problem? I got here late Purball: growling? Sorry bout that tuffy, but none of my dogs EVER growled; that's another good aspect of the golden! Purball: : ) PHMorgan: What is he growling at? Purball: yea Purball: PPSSTT, Morgan, do you breed/show dogs by ANY chance? PHMorgan: 8 months can be a fear period. Eskies can be notoriously spooky tuffy_nr: about 2 months ago my dog started growling at just about everyone and everything except for old people he knows PHMorgan: By the way, folks, Welcome to Breeder Chat PHMorgan: Topic tonight is Toplines tuffy_nr: He's and excellent lovable dog PHFlea: Well I'm heading out since your hostie is here....and I have to work on my thesis.....Night All!! tuffy_nr: good night PHMorgan: Tuffy - it will be helpful if when folks come over, you have him sit to greet them. tuffy_nr: he's the worst in the car tuffy_nr: extremly overprotective Purball: of you? PHMorgan: I find my dogs are very noisy in the car, as well Purball: or of something else? PHMorgan: I think it's important to keep in mind that various dogs have different -looking toplines for specific reasons. Purball: Hm, mine BOTH love the ride. Macintosh lays quietly and watches out the window... Finnegan on the other hand runns around in the back of the van and presses his nose against the windows hehe Purball: toplines? PHMorgan: Galloping breeds such as sighthounds or pointers will have an arch over the loin, which gives spring when runnning to help absorb the shock. Purball: oic PHMorgan: Working breeds often have short, flat toplines that lend strength to the front and rear for pulling Purball: and Finnegan's is incorrect? Purball: someone else told me that too... what's wrong with it? tuffy_nr: yes tuffy does to just if anyone comes near the car that is not suppose to be there then he wigs but it you get in the car and hold him while say a friend of mine got into the car once there sitting he's cool tuffy_nr: don't understand it Purball: pSH, sorry.... i can't help.... I really am; I hate it when no one helps me......... rrg..[img id=em-1][img id=em-2] tuffy_nr: that's okay Purball: [img id=em-5] tuffy_nr: can you PHMorgan: Have you enrolled tuffy in any obedience classes? It seems like he might need some overall discipline for you to fall back on when he gets like this. tuffy_nr: yes PHMorgan: If he doesn't do SIT, DOWN, COME and STAY reliably, it's hard to work on aggressive barking behaviors Purball: yea like sit stay sort of thing? that worked with Macintosh's running away etc. PHMorgan: I'd keep working on getting THOSE commands down SOLID Purball: very good now Purball: actually PHMorgan: Then the other stuff will begin to work itself out - YOU will be more in control for every aspect of his life Purball: [img id=em-3] it's always nice when someone knows what they're talking about!! Purball: tee hee tuffy_nr: do you think that if socialize him with strangers with a muzzel on ? Purball: do you have a picture of Tuffy? tuffy_nr: nah Purball: does he bite? Purball: darn Purball: not even on pethobbyist? tuffy_nr: I wish I did you would love him Purball: shoot Purball: :) I love most dogs! tuffy_nr: no PHMorgan: How are his feet? They look as if they could be tighter with more arched toes. tuffy_nr: me? PHMorgan: One thing is important to keep in mind, having an arch over the loin is NOT the same as being roached. PHMorgan: Let's take a moment to look at what makes up the topline.... PHMorgan: First, yo uhave the shoulder blades that fall into line right about where the withers are. The vertebrae directly after that are what makes up the BACK of teh dog. PHMorgan: The LOIN consists of the vertebrae that go from the END of the ribcage to the pelvis. PHMorgan: Then the CROUP is from the pelvis to the tail Purball: woa this is very interesting....... i wanted to be a vet for a while hey. Purball: but it's a no-go now PHMorgan: Many breeds have specific requirements about their croup. Some should be flat, others slanted, others slightly slanted PHMorgan: How the croup is slanted helps determine the rear movement and tailset. Tailset can be a very important part of type for a breed PHMorgan: Most terriers want an upright tailset and a flat croup and back. PHMorgan: Many sighthounds require a slanted croup with a low tailset and the arch over the loin Purball: BY THE WAY...... before I accidently offend someone, I'm 16 years old.. often people don't feel comfy chatting with me. that's fine if it's like that with you guys too. I can leave[img id=em-3] PHMorgan: All of these pieces of the topline fit together to help define how the dog is supposed to move. If any piece of the topline is off, it can affect movement and certainly teh dog's outline when stacked. PHMorgan: Age is not an issue here PHMorgan: Neither are questions PHMorgan: Or ignorance PHMorgan: We are ALL here to learn - from each other! Purball: :) thanks.. THATS what I want to hear.... lol PHMorgan: Pur - you never said what your breeder told you about your dog? Deerhounds: Hello, I"m back! PHMorgan: How old is he now? Purball: although I've NEVER shown a dog or anything like that. I don't really even know where to start. Only thing I DO know is that i'd have to be a junior handler...... he's born on July 16th, 2003... so that makes him something like 20 mos.... Deerhounds: why do you feel you'd have to be a junior handler? Purball: because I'm only 16 PHMorgan: OK - he's just about old enough to get started. Sign up for a handling class - have the instructor talk to you about his movement Purball: :) Deerhounds: there are no age limits on handling PHMorgan: You can also show him in teh regular breed ring at the same time Purball: okay- you just GO to those at regular obedience class places or what? Deerhounds: Junior showmanship is a specific class for young handlers, but you can show in regular conformation at any age PHMorgan: I've had my behind beat by 5 year olds in the regular breed ring before! Purball: oh I know.... but I'd really like to get the experience of showing him myself Deerhounds: Purball, you can show him yourself PHMorgan: There is no reason you can't show him yourself in the regular breeed rign! Deerhounds: see, in Junior Handling, they don't judge the dog PHMorgan: NO REASON Deerhounds: they only judge YOU Purball: REALLY?! I didn't know that..... I thought you HAD to go into junior showmanship if your under 18.... maybe it's because I'm in Canada?????? PHMorgan: I show all my own dogs PHMorgan: NOPE Deerhounds: Oh... I don't know about Canada. Morgan, do you? Purball: Okay! Well that's definetly GOOD news. Purball: hehe PHMorgan: I live in PA but my daughter has shown dogs in regular breed classes in Canada PHMorgan: IT's permitted, I think Deerhounds: In AKC, Jr Showmanship is a competition for HANDLING... not dogs Deerhounds: but any age person can bring a dog into the regular conformation ring PHMorgan: The coolest thing about Canadian Juniors is that they can just take in ANY entered dog and there is no pre=entry Purball: m-kay. Would it be a good Idea to start at Junior showmanship so I get an idea of how it goes? I've never even seen a show other than on tv (funny deer, but I've got another webpage open and it's the AKC one!!) Deerhounds: Purball, do you know that in about 25 minutes will be showdog chat, right in this room? I bet you can get more info then Deerhounds: Pur, no, Jr Showmanship is hellishly competitive PHMorgan: Yeah, I would get that informatyion from them. Purball: thanks.... that's awsome!! Okay.. so starting up there is the way to go? Deerhounds: I'd much rather show in the breed ring than Jr Show, if I was inexperienced Deerhounds: start with handling classes, you and your dog Purball: okay.. [img id=em-5] I'm so happy now Deerhounds: Pur, does your breeder think your dog is show quality? Purball: you don't know HOW many books i've taken out on showing dogs.. I've always been SO confused. You two know exactly what you're talking about though, right? Purball: that's so awsome Purball: Well, she hasn't SEEN him for a few months.... but I keep her updated (by e-mail though). I really want to get together with her sometiem though. Purball: We;re moving in a month or so..... so there's not much point in starting here. I was going to wait till we move. Purball: Oh, and wouldn't the person at handling classes know if he's show quality or not? I mean he/she should right? PHMorgan: Hello, Nyeey PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder chast PHMorgan: Chat PHMorgan: Even PHMorgan: Topic tonight is toplines Deerhounds: Purball where are you moving to? NyEelye_nr: hello evryonne Purball: somewhere elst in canada Purball: [img id=em-3] Purball: *else Deerhounds: yes, the teacher in a handling class, and the other students, will probably give you lots of feedback on your dog GSMD: so what have I missed? ;) Deerhounds: I was just about to tell about how I finally GOT IT about topline in my breed Purball: so does the computer not hold profiles or something"? because no one seems to have one... PHMorgan: We were discussing various parts of the topline and how they might differ in various breEDS? PHMorgan: Lots of folks just didn't do them Deerhounds: I had read in our standard that a flat topline makes a deerhound unable to do "uphill work," but I never really KNEW what that meant.... PHMorgan: TELL TELL, Deer Purball: SOrry guys, I keep pulling you off topic eeee PHMorgan: S'okay Purball - variety is the spice of life Deerhounds: Pur, mine was deleted when they upgraded the software three weeks ago. Everyone's was, now they have to put them back. GSMD: In my breed one likes to see a level topline Purball: so what are deerhounds actually bred for? Deerhounds: OK, so.... back to topline Deerhounds: GSMD, right, every breed is different Deerhounds: so I was standing halfway up a hill Purball: GSMD what's your breed? are you a breeder/shower? Deerhounds: and the topography of the land was such that my dogs were running up the hill, but perpendiular to where I was standing Deerhounds: and one of the dogs had a fairly flat topline when he moved, although it was pretty good when he stood PHMorgan: WB< TJ GSMD: breeder and shower... greater Swiss mtn. dogs Deerhounds: and the other had a good topline Deerhounds: and I suddenly saw that the dog with the flat topline was far less agile running up the hill than the other dog Deerhounds: it made him cover less ground, or to cover the same ground, he had to work harder TJRuff_nr: hi Purball: AWWW they're so cute! They almost look like bernese mountain dogs without all the furr! GSMD: what are your thoughts on high rears? Deerhounds: obviously a huge drawback for a galloping hound! Deerhounds: GSMD, well..... you mean in growing dogs? PHMorgan: Often a high rear in a mature adult means that the rear angulation is less than the front angulation GSMD: no, in adults... it seems to becoming an issue ion my breed PHMorgan: Can make for interesting movement Deerhounds: Purball, Deerhounds are just what the name suggests... bred to hunt deer. But teh Scottish deer is more like an elk, than the little white tails most of us think of when we say "deer" Deerhounds: GSMD, I really dislike a high rear Purball: woa, I'm lost... but it's okay- as long as your talking about our beloved canines[img id=em-5] Deerhounds: especially if it's due to insufficient angulation behind GSMD: lol Purball: oic Purball: hehe GSMD: it *seems* to me that the angulation is there... maybe the fronts are too short...? Purball: well... i'm lost on toplines, only that Finnegans is okay to Morgan hehe Deerhounds: I don't think I've seen a dog where it WASN'T... I guess it's technically possible to have a "high rear" because of your topline.... Purball: eek PHMorgan: Well, if the dog has sufficient angulation in the rear, AND it's high in teh rear, that means it's back legse are longer than the front - definitely a problem Deerhounds: GSMD, well, I know what you're saying Deerhounds: if the rear seems correct and the front seems too short, yes, it's a problem of the front Deerhounds: a dog who is out of balance like that... forget angles, we're talking the SKELETON being wrong... I'd consider that a very severe structural fault PHMorgan: Me too Deerhounds: if a dog could just use a bit more angulation, well, I can live with that GSMD: i am having a hard time figuring it out... a dog will have a perfect line in one shot and be high in the rear in the next... hard to tell where the fault lies Deerhounds: but if their legs are too short... I dunno! Purball: I'm going to see what stacked goldens look like on breeder sites.... but I can hear when you add a new message..... hummm Deerhounds: GSMD, you can't judge this in photos PHMorgan: IT can really depend on the dog's posture, teh ground he's standing on, etc. Deerhounds: ok Pur! PHMorgan: I can fix quite a lot with stacking - ESPECIALLY toplines GSMD: that was just a guess... i'm not convinced that is the problem Purball: hhe- i can't be much help on the topic anyways.
Deerhounds: toplines are very easy to fix in a photo
Purball: I'm just waitiing for show chat so I can ask about showing etc.
PHMorgan: It's when the dog is moving that you can really see the issues
Deerhounds: you have to see the dog just standing around, and moving
Deerhounds: not stacked
PHMorgan: I like to see SOME spring in the topline of a sighthound or running breed, but NONE in a working dog or terrier
Deerhounds: I would say toplines are probably the area I"m the least familiar with breeds other than my own
Deerhounds: or, other than sighthounds
GSMD: the last show I went to, I took a ton of pics and since I can' remember everything as it was, I am relying abit on my pics...
Deerhounds: Hiya Hutchie!
PHMorgan: Welcome to Breeder Chat, Hutchie
PHMorgan: Topic tonight is Toplines
PHMorgan: OK - so we got 15 minutes left... let's touch briefly on feet
Deerhounds: GSMD, that is absolutely fine, I just meant.... you need to see a dog in person to judge their topline
PHMorgan: I think they play such an important part in teh work of the dog.....
Hutchie_nr: Hello all
Purball: hey
Purball: do you breed dogs Hutchie?
GSMD: so feet... anyone heard of adding Vit C to make them tighter?
Hutchie_nr: yes bulldogs
Deerhounds: GSMD, yes, I've heard of it
Purball: kool
Purball: do you have any pics?
PHMorgan: A sighthound requires a long toed hare foot to cover ground powerfully and grab at teh terrain at a gallop
GSMD: any thoughts?
Deerhounds: I've heard that vitamin C can improve ligament strength
PHMorgan: GSMD - absolutely
Deerhounds: Morgan, and our standard calls for LONG CURVED NAILS
PHMorgan: I have seen it 100 times on rescue dogs
Deerhounds: which they also use
PHMorgan: Terriers and digging breeds need powerful pasterns and hard thick nails along with powerful toes
Purball: hummmmmmm do you guys know anyone who breeds goldens? tee hee
GSMD: long nails! must be nice... i've got the dremmel out every week lOL
PHMorgan: Many of the northern breeds require very hairy feet to protect against elements
Deerhounds: LOL GSMD, yes, well I may carry that a bit further than the authors of our standard really intended
PHMorgan: Swimming dogs need webbing with wide spaced large foot to pull in teh water.
Deerhounds: as long as the nails don't touch the ground when the dog is standing, it's ok with me
Deerhounds: but that's still a mighty long nail
Deerhounds: considering the size and height of the correct deerhound foot
PHMorgan: Many of the northern guard and working breeds require rear dewclaws and a large foot to give traction in the snow
GSMD: i like my nails REALLY short...
Deerhounds: not functional in my breed, they need their nails. AND IMO their dewclaws, which I never remove
PHMorgan: I keep my dog's nails VERy short for showing, but allow them to grow for field work so they have more grab in teh terrain
Deerhounds: right
PHMorgan: Showdogs have as little toenails as possible
Deerhounds: I'd like to mention one other thing about feet
PHMorgan: Go for it
GSMD: short nails all the time here and no dew claws [img id=em-3]
Deerhounds: I have only ever had one deerhound who was a jumper
Deerhounds: she would jump over low fences, baby gates, that kind of thing
PHMorgan: HIya, Mow
PHMowgli: hello everyon e
Deerhounds: and when she got to be ten, she was abosolutely down in the front on both feet
Deerhounds: I took her to the orthopedist
PHMorgan: AND?
Deerhounds: he said he sees it in jumpers, either competitive dogs or "recreational jumpers" like Rosie, all the time
Deerhounds: he said they really are not built to land on their front feet like that
Deerhounds: and over time it damages the ligaments
Deerhounds: so now, I'd love to take her out as a veteran at Specialities
Deerhounds: because she's lovely
Deerhounds: but I really can't
Deerhounds: end of story
PHMorgan: WHY NOT?
PHMorgan: Take her - even if that is her fault.
Deerhounds: she has two flat front feet!
PHMorgan: It's not the whole dog
Deerhounds: hmmm
PHMorgan: So? It's outdoors, right?
Deerhounds: you really think?
PHMorgan: She's 10, right?
Deerhounds: Hi, MOwgli, didn't mean to ignore you
Deerhounds: Morgan, yes
PHMorgan: C'mon - is she still fit and sound otherwise????
Deerhounds: oh yes
Deerhounds: she looks and moves great
PHMorgan: Let the poor girl show!
Deerhounds: well, maybe I'll take her to our regional this summer
PHMorgan: Morgan has had two hematoma surgeries on her ears, and has a broken front tooth.
Purball: hmmmmm be right back... I'm going to try taking a picture of Finnegan in a GOOD stack with the digi camera
Deerhounds: and our National is in Oregon next year, so maybe I'll take her up there
PHMorgan: YOu better believe her cute butt shows in Veterans at the Nationals
Purball: if it';s any good, I'll share it with you guys
Deerhounds: Morgan, how does she do?
PHMorgan: And darned if she didnt get 2nd out of about 12 last year
Deerhounds: Pur, hurry back, showdog chat starts in three minutes!
Deerhounds: welcomew back TJ!
PHMowgli: hey TJ
Purball: aiiiiiiiiii I will!!
Deerhounds: congrats Morgan! Maybe I will
Deerhounds: I'm getting lots of pep talks from Morgan these days
PHMorgan: And then we have a huge ringwide discussion about how she never finished and what a crime it was and how she's sucha good producer and what lovely children she gave me....
PHMorgan: It's worth it
PHMorgan: PHMorgan believes all things are possible.... LOL
TJRuff_nr: Hi again
Deerhounds: in fact, MOwgli.... could you have a topic of showing in veterans for Showdog chat some week soon?
PHMorgan: Er... taht was meant to be ringSIDE
Deerhounds: LOL MOrgan
PHMorgan: Yeah, my precious Morgan, who onever finished, placed above about 8 of the top dogs who were showing at the time I had her out....
Deerhounds: so, what topic shall we have next week in dog breeding chat? Should we stick with structure, or should we go to something else for a break?
PHMowgli: sure Christy
PHMorgan: I think we need a break
Deerhounds: LOL, I was trying to get Mow's attention
Deerhounds: Mowgli, just let me know when you want to do it, and I'll mention it in my mailing!
PHMowgli: Will Do christy
PHMorgan: Let's talk about something more touchy-feely
PHMorgan: Suggetsions?
Deerhounds: hmmmm
PHMorgan: How about, what to do with puppies who come BACK!
PHMowgli: did you get one back Morgan
Deerhounds: I don't know....
PHMorgan: How to handle those phone calls, how to help, when to step in and place the dog
PHMorgan: NEver have, mow
PHMorgan: BUT I've prevented it twice
Deerhounds: hmmmmm
PHMorgan: ONce was nothing to do with the dog or the owner
GSMD: questions to ask breeders and what their answers tell you?
Deerhounds: I don't know, MOrgan, that topic is not getting me all excited
PHMowgli: I'm game for any topic I will even be on time next week for breeders chat LOL
Deerhounds: LOL Mow
Deerhounds: questions to ask breeders is a good topic, but maybe not for breeders chat
PHMowgli: I was on phone tonight LOL
Deerhounds: and we've done a couple of chats already on screening puppy buyers... haven't we?
PHMowgli: that would be great for small dog though LOL
Deerhounds: let me look at past topics, but I"m pretty sure we have
GSMD: how to deal with the politics in breeding? lol[img id=em-0]
PHMowgli: afterall you can own twice as many dogs if they are small LOL
PHMorgan: Deer- just because YOU never get any back... LOL
GSMD: and showing...
PHMorgan: Doesn't mean others don't have to deal with those issues
Deerhounds: LOL MOrgan, I've TAKEN one back
PHMorgan: But I'm up for other suggestoins
Deerhounds: the one in my avatar, actually
PHMowgli: I got one back yesterday LOL
PHMorgan: Yes, but that was for teh dog's own good
PHMowgli: yes Morgan but how did you know LOL
PHMorgan: Course, that is always the case
PHMorgan: I know the whole story
PHMorgan: And I'm psychic
Deerhounds: we did screening puppy buyers last April
PHMorgan: :-D
Deerhounds: too soon to do it again
PHMowgli: oh no wonder it is the psychic host
Deerhounds: LOL
PHMorgan: What about........
PHMowgli: maybe we could have MOrgan tell our futures next week
Deerhounds: ROFL
PHMorgan: Helping new folks get started in PERFORMANCE?????
PHMorgan: Mow will have hair all over her clothing and vehicle
Deerhounds: that sounds good, and that would flow well into showdog chat
PHMowgli: I liked my topic LOL
Deerhounds: helping our puppy buyers?
PHMorgan: Deer will have muddy pawprints in her foyer
Deerhounds: LOL
PHMowgli: well I know you got my future right LOL
PHMorgan: GSMD will have a large dogfood bill
Deerhounds: it's hot and dry here, no mud anywhere
PHMorgan: TJ will attend an obedience class after the move........
PHMorgan: Deer- you will still have them.
Deerhounds: all these storms all winter long, and then three days ago, boom, heatwave
PHMowgli: chrsity just wait till the dogs turn on the hose LOL
Deerhounds: LOL Morgan
PHMorgan: Dogs playing outside in dusty yard.... Drooling with heat and thirst.... Muddy pawprints
PHMorgan: I'm telling ya
Deerhounds: ROFL
PHMorgan: You're doomed either way
PHMowgli: LOL
Deerhounds: ok, so I now have to GROOM Rosie to show in veterans, and take my old boys in to get their semen collected
Deerhounds: MOrgan is always finding ways I can run even more out of time, LOL
PHMowgli: and clean up the muddy paw prints
Deerhounds: I'm having Morgan come over and clean them up
PHMowgli: ok lets do veterans 2 weeks from today
Deerhounds: great, thanks Mow!
PHMowgli: and that way maybe we can do something with old dogs on breeders chat that week too
PHMowgli: when to retire or something along those lines
Deerhounds: that sounds like a good idea
PHMorgan: Deer - did we ahve something on retirees? Not recently RIGHT?
Deerhounds: Hmmm, let me check
PHMorgan: Let's keep those as our next 2 weeks of topics
Deerhounds: Morgan, I don't see anything on retirees
PHMowgli: so next week Morgan and the following?
Deerhounds: OK, so what's next week for dog breeding chat?
PHMowgli: or jsut 2 weeks from tonight?
PHMowgli: I is confused
Deerhounds: We'll do oldtimers in two weeks, for both chats
PHMowgli: good I can do that
Deerhounds: and taking dogs back/trying to fix placements with problems in one week
Deerhounds: I'll word that better
Deerhounds: and I'll edit this part out of the log so people don't think we're boring, LOL
PHMowgli: When we have to welcome back a placed pup
PHMorgan: LOL
PHMorgan: Wait - didn't we have anotehr topic more interesting? Wasn't there something about getting started in performance?
PHMorgan: Or shall we hold that one?
Purball: Well I'm back.
PHMowgli: WB
Purball: wat are you guys all talking about?
Deerhounds: OK pur, well it's Showdog chat now!
GSMD: if we do go back to structure... i'd like to discuss fronts ;)
Deerhounds: we were just discussing topics for chats next week
PHMowgli: next 2 weeks topics
PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!
Purball: didn't have much luck getting finnegan to stack for me..... he did once but it's not too good a picture
Purball: I COULD show you guys..... but it might be dissapointing
Purball: :)
PHMowgli: This weeks topic getting prepared for the show!!!!!!
PHMorgan: GSMD - get the log from last week
PHMorgan: It was covered in spade
PHMorgan: Deer and I nearly haad a brownie fight over it... LOL
GSMD: sorry... new here ;)
Deerhounds: GSMD, did you see last week's log?
GSMD: no... i'll look it up
PHMowgli: So how many of you actually show your dogs?
