Tuesday, April 13, 2004: Secret Weapons and "Trade Secrets"

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!! Tonights topic trade secrets!!!

PHMowgli: Ok lets start show dog with our usual beginning do we have any brags tonight?

PHChristy: no brags here, but I'm VERY excited about my upcoming National Speciality in May!

rottieluv: Hey I have brags for my 6 1/2 month old puppy. Are you ready??? ;0)

PHMowgli: Well Merlin finished him Canadian CD last saturday

bert_nr: Are you taking your old girl then?

bert_nr: Clapping hands

PHMowgli: Christy you will have a ball

PHMowgli: rottie please tell us your brag

PHChristy: Congrats, Mowgli!

PHMowgli: thanks christy

bert_nr: Did I sink into a blackhole again?

PHChristy: I'm not taking my bitch to the national, it's the regional in July I'm taking her to. I have to fly to Vermont, I don't fly my dogs.

PHChristy: bert, I don't know... did you?

rottieluv: At the Rottie National my puppy placed 2nd in Futurity (out of 10), 1st in Sweeps, Best Op in Sweeps, 2nd in Reg class (last 2 wins 14 shown) then over the weekend in Canada she won Best Puppy at the Regional Specialty Show and Best in Sweeps and then Best Puppy at 2 all breed shows.

bert_nr: Nope I'm still here

PHChristy: : : : : : : : : : : : Digging bert out: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

PHChristy: OMG, rottie, that's not a brag, that's a SUPERBRAG!

bert_nr: WOW Rottie

PHMowgli: wow rottie congrats!!!!!!!!!!!

bert_nr: That didn't sound like applause

PHMowgli: LOL

PHMowgli: ok on to trade secrets

PHMowgli: lets all share one trade secret LOL

rottieluv: This puppy is from my very first litter out of the bitch I was just talking about. Her brother also won 3rd place in futurity owner handled by his mom (not a pro) and the mom was 4th in the brood bitch class.

PHChristy: "Always smile at the judge with confidence when he or she is looking at you and your dog"

PHMowgli: my favorite one is sta-flo starch in place of crown royal or other bodifying sprays

PHChristy: never avoid his or her eyes or look down or look worried or harried

PHChristy: rottie, that's so wonderful, and rotties are REALLY competitive, too!

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!! Tonights topic trade secrets!!!

PHMowgli: hi mesa

PHChristy: I don't really have any "secrets" such as products or anything, we don't really groom deerhounds much

mesashelties_nr: Hi all

PHChristy: hey there mesa!

bert_nr: Oh gosh I don't show enough to have secrets

PHMowgli: rotties are really competitive actually christy I think you have the least competitive breed tonight

mesashelties_nr: It has bee a long time.....

mesashelties_nr: how are you all

PHMowgli: good mesa do you have any brags to share?

rottieluv: And always act like your dog is a winner!! And don't forget to smile, I saw so many frowns at the shows I just attended. And don't forget to have fun too.

mesashelties_nr: Oh yes I do

PHMowgli: judges like us to have fun as well as our dogs

PHChristy: rottie, so true!

PHChristy: bert, that's a secret too... 'don't show so often you burn out'

mesashelties_nr: one of my first home bred bitches took a reserve at at a small show here

bert_nr: What you really do is agiltiy as stress relief

mesashelties_nr: I was happy!!

PHMowgli: oh great mesa

PHChristy: mesa, that's great!!! the home breds are the BEST wins!

rottieluv: And don't get too serious, I love to win and of course its not as much fun when you lose, but there is always another show in another town on another day.

mesashelties_nr: yes, she is back out in Columbus this weekend

mesashelties_nr: wish us luck!!

PHChristy: if your dog isn't having fun, stop what you're doing and FIX IT

PHMowgli: good luck mesa are you going to the Nationals?

PHChristy: mesa, GOOD LUCK!!!!

mesashelties_nr: no not this year

PHMowgli: me either too far

rottieluv: Congrats Mesashelties!! Good luck and hope this time you get the points!! ;0)))

mesashelties_nr: too far and I am not into shipping babies

PHMowgli: I don't ship either

mesashelties_nr: the bitch is only 10 months old

PHMowgli: mesa my brag was a 7 mth old boy got his canadian cd this weekend

mesashelties_nr: congrats Mow

rottieluv: Mesa, never know. My pup (rottie) finished at 10 months owner handled. : 0)))

PHChristy: Mesa, I don't ship my dogs but I do go to the spec8ialties, I think it's VERY valuable, whether you're showing or not

PHMowgli: and rottie stole her nationals with one of her pups LOL

PHChristy: in fact, maybe MORE valuable if you aren't showing, and just watching and learning

mesashelties_nr: you are talking about trade secrets......

PHChristy: yeah, I suspect Rottie has been floating on a cloud fo ra while

PHMowgli: well actually we are we stopped to let you get your brag in LOL

mesashelties_nr: yes, I have a litter due any minute though

PHMowgli: anohter great trade secret I think you all can use is newspaper

PHMowgli: if you take a newspaper and rub it on the coat od a black dog it makes it shiny and deep black and will not rub off on the hands

PHChristy: Mowgli, let me ask... and don't get mad... but do you think it's RIGHT to do that?

PHMowgli: Christy yes

mesashelties_nr: will that cover a white body spot?

PHChristy: using starch or black ink on their coats? they are supposed to be shown as god made them....

PHChristy: it's against AKC rules, though

PHMowgli: I think it is better to rub a newspaper on a dog coats than to put 5 lbs of chalk on it

mesashelties_nr: LOL!!

PHChristy: sure, better... but RIGHT? altering the dog is altering the dog

PHMowgli: ah but here we have a quandry LOL

mesashelties_nr: and most do have 5 lbs of chalk and 2 of hair spray

PHChristy: how so?

rottieluv: Gotta go make dinner thanks for letting me take part in your chat!!! Have a great week!!!

PHMowgli: AKC rules state no artifical substances yet I see at ringside coloring with magic markers in front of judges and nothing is done

PHChristy: night rottie, congrats again!

PHMowgli: nite rottie

PHChristy: that's true, Mowgli, and I see a lot of other things at ringside but I don't DO them

PHMowgli: lbs of chalk and nothing is done now why should we lose just to hold onto our ideals

mesashelties_nr: I personally would like to win with a natural dog

PHMowgli: I agree it is wrong but in some breeds such as mine if you do not add in the foreign substances you will not ever win

PHChristy: if the judges do anything they get blackballed for judging assignements

PHChristy: I remember an interview with one poodle judge who sent out someone for a hairpiece on teh dog....

PHChristy: who was blackballed and got no further assignments in poodles

PHMowgli: I can actually say when I started in dogs I did not use anything I stuck to my ideal for 3 yrs

PHChristy: why do people let this happen to their breeds, though?

PHChristy: if everyone just gives in, then whose fault is it?

PHChristy: I know it's easy for me to say in my breed....

PHChristy: but I wouldn't WANT a breed where you had to be dishonest to win

PHMowgli: at one show a dog got a bit car sick so I used some baby powder and crown royal to freshen coat

PHMowgli: we took best in breed

PHChristy: if you brush it all out I'm not sure why that is so bad, although I guess some of it sticks in the coat no matter how hard you brush

PHMowgli: the very next day same dog same competition took best in breed

PHMowgli: the next weekend same competition nothing on coat took 4th in class

PHMowgli: many judges do not know what a natural coat feels like so the dogs without substances on get penalized for incorrect coat texture

PHMowgli: and a coated breed that is important

PHChristy: what do the rest of you think?

bert_nr: Christy are you taking your veteran to your National?

PHChristy: bert, no, to the Regional in July.... National is too far away, it's in Vermont. I'm in CA

Nei_Kai: hey

bert_nr: I don't chalk my Samoyeds

PHChristy: but our regional is driving distance

PHMowgli: I know the answer to this is probperly training judges but remember they being taught with dogs groomed for show

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!! Tonights topic trade secrets!!!

PHChristy: hi there Nei Kai!

PHMowgli: neikai

PHMowgli: hi neikai that was

Nei_Kai: im sorta bored anyone want to talk personally no me...im a 15 m and I have dachshund

Nei_Kai: lol

Nei_Kai: hi

PHChristy: Nei, do you show your dog?

Nei_Kai: nope

Nei_Kai: she isnt really show quality

PHChristy: we're talking about tips and "secret weapons" for making our dogs look and show their best in the show ring

Nei_Kai: oh

Nei_Kai: ok

PHChristy: Nei Kai, that's ok too! All dogs are wonderful, not just the show dogs!!

PHMowgli: christy do you use powders to pluck your dogs?

Nei_Kai: yeah plus she is a little plump if you know what i mean

PHChristy: Mowgli, no, nothing like that

PHChristy: we just make sure not to bathe them too close to th day of a show, or their coats will be too fluffy

PHMowgli: I was not sure as many wired haired dogs do

Nei_Kai: well sorry i have to go already

Nei_Kai: bye

PHChristy: I like at least 2-3 days to get the coat back to normal before a show

PHChristy: Night Nei Kai!

PHChristy: but we don't strip our breed

PHMowgli: I bathe at least 1 week prior to show

PHChristy: just the long soft hairs off the ears

PHMowgli: oh ok

PHChristy: they are supposed to be shown basically ungroomed beyond a bit of neatening

PHChristy: their coat is supposed to be rough and harsh and ragged

PHMowgli: and your breed has very little competition also though so it may be a bit easier to show a more (rare breed)

PHChristy: Yes, I know, but it's also one of the reasons I chose my breed

PHMowgli: my breed chose me I did not really choose a breed I grew up in it

PHChristy: so did I, but I still had a choice

PHChristy: anyway, I didn't mean to make this an argument... I'm sorry.

PHChristy: we can go onto something else, LOL

PHMowgli: which may be one reason I am switching to a stud kennel I am contemplating in yrs switching breeds LOL

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!! Tonights topic trade secrets!!!

PHChristy: hi there JRfever!

PHChristy: now, here's a breed that doesn't get overly groomed for show, LOL!

PHMowgli: actually christy this is a topic we should discuss these are things we need to discuss LOL

JRfever_nr: hello

PHMowgli: hey JR

PHChristy: Mowgli, might be a good topic for another night... Ethics: Where do we draw the line?

PHMowgli: Christy remember when aussie's got accepted to AKC they swore their breed would not be corrupted well look at the dogs already can you see them in another 15 yrs

PHChristy: I mean, could a poodle win if their handler didn't load them up with hairspray? and if not, what are you supposed to do if you love poodles?

PHChristy: Mowgli, well, I knew they WOULD be ruined

PHChristy: I didn't believe them when they swore

PHMowgli: exactly lets do that next week

PHChristy: ok

PHChristy: is that the 20th

PHChristy: ?

PHChristy: I won't be here, let's save it for a week I can be here!

PHMowgli: Ok

PHChristy: JRfever, do you have JRTs?

PHMowgli: tonight is the 12th I think

JRfever_nr: yep

JRfever_nr: how did you guess?

JRfever_nr: 2

bert_nr: I believe they're PRT's now LOL

JRfever_nr: Romeo & Spirit

mesashelties_nr: no Mow....today is the 13th

JRfever_nr: yeah?

JRfever_nr: i hate that

PHMowgli: yes bert

bert_nr: Tax day coming soon

PHMowgli: ok mesa I never know what date it is I know it is tuesday though so that has to redeem me a bit LOL

PHChristy: Isn't it only the AKC ones that had the name change?

JRfever_nr: yes

PHChristy: LOL Mowgli, that's all that matters, so you don't miss chats *G*

JRfever_nr: ukc still JRT

JRfever_nr: We are UKC

PHMowgli: exactly Christy

PHChristy: that's another breed I never wanted to see the AKC get its claws into

JRfever_nr: JRT???

PHChristy: yes

PHMowgli: oh we can't do the AKC thing LOL

bert_nr: Hey they dropped the Spaniel from the Brittany

PHChristy: LOL

JRfever_nr: We don't do confirmation

PHMowgli: that is a whole chat in itself LOL

JRfever_nr: Agility

PHChristy: I think the parent club wanted that, they really aren't a spaniel

bert_nr: True

PHChristy: I have mixed feelings about the AKC....

bert_nr: I'm having typing problems tonite

JRfever_nr: not sure

PHChristy: my breed is one of the ones they recognized from the day they were created so they haven't harmed us in any way

JRfever_nr: concentrating on UKC for now

PHMowgli: Christy maybe we should schedule a chat the AKC versus other choices LOL

PHChristy: but it seems that many of the breeds they have recognized (not all) in recent years, it's been to the deteriment of the breed, esp its working ability over its looks

bert_nr: Eeek asking for STRONG opinions there

PHChristy: Mowgli, a good idea too

PHMowgli: which would include agilty and all venues

PHChristy: strong opinions are good!

PHMowgli: yes we need people to realize we do have choices and we need to base decisions on something

PHMowgli: therefore strong opinions are good

PHChristy: I couldn't agree more strongly, Mowgli *G*

PHChristy: but I feel I derailed our "trade secrets" chat somewhat

PHChristy: and I feel bad

bert_nr: Long day I'm turning in Bye all

PHMowgli: I do show AKC as well as other venues so I am not a good spokesman cause I just love to show LOL

PHMowgli: nite bert

JRfever_nr: bye bert

PHChristy: night bert!

PHChristy: Mowgli, I hate to abandon you, but I have GOT to eat my dinner, my blood sugar is plummeting. *G*

PHMowgli: Christy sometimes that is gonna happen though we get on a topic and it turns into another topic and we then share opinions

PHMowgli: Ok you go eat dinner

JRfever_nr: bye

PHChristy: ok, you'll let me know about next week's topic?

PHChristy: even though I won't be here?

mesashelties_nr: Take Care

PHChristy: goodnight JRfever, hope to see you next week!

PHMowgli: nite Christy

PHChristy: oh wait

PHChristy: week after next *G*

PHChristy: night all!

JRfever_nr: i'll try

PHMowgli: mesa any pups yet?

mesashelties_nr: no her temp is still up

PHMowgli: oh so probably not till tomorrow then

mesashelties_nr: maybe it will drop tomorow

PHMowgli: darn I was hoping I could a play by play color wise LOL

mesashelties_nr: her first due date was Mon.....

PHMowgli: who is it that is due?

mesashelties_nr: and she has whelped the day prior to her 1st date

PHMowgli: JR do you show in obediece and other venues too?

mesashelties_nr: in hte past

JRfever_nr: Agility for right now

PHMowgli: mesa maybe she only has 1-2 pups this time

JRfever_nr: maybe obedience with my male

mesashelties_nr: Deena, our sabe is due

JRfever_nr: after a little more work

PHMowgli: I am dabbling in agility I need to learn more I keep messing up the dogs LOL

PHMowgli: Oh Ok she had pups last yr I think too

JRfever_nr: We all mess up the dogs

PHMowgli: had some tris boys

mesashelties_nr: yes last Jan

JRfever_nr: I'm a beginner

JRfever_nr: 6 months showing

PHMowgli: ah see I do remember what you guys tell me LOL

JRfever_nr: 1 1/2 training

mesashelties_nr: yes you are much better than I am at that!!

PHMowgli: JR I am a beginner in tracking and agility

PHMowgli: mesa my last litter of 7 turned out awesome

JRfever_nr: i think terrier racing would be awesome

JRfever_nr: my girl is so fast for a ball

mesashelties_nr: Oh?? good for you!

PHMowgli: the ones I needed an emergency c-section on

JRfever_nr: we want to try flyball

PHMowgli: one of those pups was one who got his cd already

mesashelties_nr: I have started one of my girls in Agility

PHMowgli: I am training another now to start in conformation next moth

PHMowgli: month *

mesashelties_nr: ahe needed some confidence

JRfever_nr: shelties excel so well in agility

mesashelties_nr: and it did help

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!! Tonights topic trade secrets!!!

JRfever_nr: hello doog

doog_nr: hello.

PHMowgli: ok anyone want another trade secret that is actually against AKC rules LOL

doog_nr: do you know if dogs can et rib bones?

JRfever_nr: all ears

mesashelties_nr: LOL!! yes I hav eone

PHMowgli: doog are they cooked?

doog_nr: baked in oven.

PHMowgli: if they are cooked they should not have them then as they splinter too easily

PHMowgli: ok mesa you share yours too LOL

mesashelties_nr: use super coat for 3-4 days b4 a show ....

doog_nr: how can they be prepared so they can eat the bones?

JRfever_nr: i think boiled???

mesashelties_nr: it makes the coat fuller....

PHMowgli: mesa get sta-flo liquid starch mix 1/3 starch with 2/3 water it works better than super coat LOL

JRfever_nr: not sure though

PHMowgli: doog just give them raw

PHMowgli: don't cook them for dogs at all

mesashelties_nr: That is a good idea

mesashelties_nr: and it works?

doog_nr: That's what I thought, but wasn't sure. I'll try to ask some others. Thank you

PHMowgli: it works awesome replaces supercoat and crown royal

mesashelties_nr: then I blow the coat and line brush

PHMowgli: also rather than chalk on white areas use corn starch it is finer and sticks to coat better for fuller look

PHMowgli: yep me too I do it 3-4 days 1-2 times each day before show LOL

PHMowgli: and the starch is not stick at all if it rains or judges hands are wet LOL

mesashelties_nr: for the blaze and under jaw......

mesashelties_nr: use pool hall chalk

PHMowgli: for the blaze and underjaw I use eye shadow pencils

PHMowgli: but I will try that I never though ot pool hall chalk LOL

mesashelties_nr: it is softer than white chalk

mesashelties_nr: and you can get 2lbs if it for around $5

PHMowgli: but in dec you can get those makeup kits at k-mart for 4.99 it has like 10 eye shadow pencils in them and they work good on faces

mesashelties_nr: not the blue stuff you use in the cue tips though

mesashelties_nr: LOL!

PHMowgli: touch up masks and stuff

PHMowgli: well I bet you could use the blue on a blue LOL

PHMowgli: Ok I have one more that only mesa can use LOL

PHMowgli: make homemade play dough only in place of flour use colored chalk and this makes a great ear weight of the dogs color

mesashelties_nr: make it with water?

PHMowgli: and it is non-toxic if other pups eat it off plus once dry it can just be flaked away with no residue

PHMowgli: water, baking soda and colored chalk

PHMowgli: make a pea sized ball and rub into ear tip it has to be moist when you put it on but once it is dry it works great very cheap and non toxic

PHMowgli: you can buy playdough and just rub chalk over top too if you have kids just steal their white LOL

mesashelties_nr: you use this for training the ear down?

PHMowgli: yes it will put in a perfect tip on those flyawy ears

mesashelties_nr: and remove it b4 the show?

PHMowgli: and it just breaks away and you can brush out the powder that is left at ring side

PHMowgli: it also does not tear out fur or leave a sticky residue like glues do

mesashelties_nr: knowing me I would forget it!

mesashelties_nr: LOL!

PHMowgli: I normally check ears at van before I go to grooming area LOL

PHMowgli: I have a note for myself on dash LOL

mesashelties_nr: take care all

PHMowgli: but I think you have kids so just steal a tiny bit of their playdough and try it you will be suprised

mesashelties_nr: it is time for the kids to go to bed

PHMowgli: yes I need to get to bed myself it is 11 pm LOL

mesashelties_nr: thanks Mow!

PHMowgli: nite everyone

mesashelties_nr: have a great week !!
