Tuesday, August 17, 2004: Open Showdog Discussion

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

PHMowgli: does anyone have any brags???

PHMowgli: if you do get them in fast before we all falll again LOL

PHMowgli: because of the glitch in the ite tonight we are having open chat so we do not miss anything important

VAL911K9: me

PHMowgli: ok start chatting

Maggiemay155: what does everyone show?

PHMowgli: go ahead val

MiniSch_nr: Can we talk about choosing the class to enter in?

VAL911K9: got confirmation this week that Quest - my bred by boy is #3 in the top ten with UKC at only 2yrs old

PHMowgli: maggie I show shelties and collies in conformation, agility, and obeidence and trying herding

MiniSch_nr: I show miniature schnauzers in conformation and I have started training in agility.

PHMowgli: awesome Val

MiniSch_nr: Congratulations Val - that is my dream.

Maggiemay155: I show cavaliers and bouviers in conformation and am starting agility

PHMowgli: oh great maggie

Dogaroo: Someday I'll show at least one Swedish Vallhund :-)

PHMowgli: yeah dog we know it is the dream that just keeps on dreaming LOL

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

Dogaroo: lol Mowgli, either that or I'll keep ending up with BYB rescues

PHMowgli: dog prolly LOL

Dogaroo: I really should look at AMBOR more closely.

VAL911K9: thanks Mow I am so proud of him

PHMowgli: or I will send you a spoiled sheltie LOL

Dogaroo: ..and going to shows spending my money at vendor booths ;-)

VAL911K9: Dog also check otu ARBA - american rare breed association

Maggiemay155: isn't that the truth dogaroo

PHMowgli: val I would love to get a dog in top ten LOL

VAL911K9: well UKC is not as many dogs as AKC but one day we will be AKC too

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

PHMowgli: tonights chat is open due to our site rebooting itself

Dogaroo: Whew... After that last chat, if I get a show dog he's gonna be a HE!!

Maggiemay155: what breed val?

VAL911K9: Dogue de Bordeuax - known as French nastiff

PHMowgli: dogaroo I am switching to a stud kennel LOL

VAL911K9: oops mastiff

Maggiemay155: can you not show them in Canada?

Dogaroo: I met one of them nastiffs once... about took a chunk outta my behind!

PHMowgli: ok guys while I have some of you here lets get a topic for next week since we are doing open this week LOL

bossanovabassets: I am so excited. The basset Nationals are on the west coast this year for the first time in a long time....it will be my first nationals.

Dogaroo: It was a 2 lb. chihuahua nastiff. I bent down to talk to his lady friend & he came around & got me from behind.

PHMowgli: brb everyone sorry dog needs to go out

bossanovabassets: Ring politics?

VAL911K9: yeah we can show in Canada but I live on the Mexico border

Maggiemay155: its only a 1 hour chat bossanova LOL

Dogaroo: Bossanova, when & were were nationals again?

Maggiemay155: that would be a bit of a hike :)

bossanovabassets: This year in Portland...the last week in Sept....blushing...forgot I mentioned it last week....just very excited.

Dogaroo: I need to make a note of that.

bossanovabassets: breed type versus style?

PHMowgli: ok I am back

Minuet: Evening

VAL911K9: Dog- sorry about that some can be a little testy

PHMowgli: boss type vs style can you enhance on what you mean by that??

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

PHMowgli: hi mn

PHMowgli: min that is

Dogaroo: Val, this was a poorly bred, poorly socialized chihuahua who had Small Dog Syndrome. ;-) Really, I'm quite fond of Mastiff breeds.

VAL911K9: LOL- me too my guys love people - just not big about other dogs

bossanovabassets: We all shoot for a " typey dog', but there are different styles within that....some become more popular....thus affecting how the standards are interpreted.

MiniSch_nr: Sorry, have to go back and read to catch up. Had to take a phone call.

bossanovabassets: For example....West coast bassets are often a larger "style" boned dog than those on the east coast.....

Dogaroo: There are tons of styles in Labs! Have noticed some judges seem to prefer different types. *sigh&

bossanovabassets: How much should style influence how the standard is interpreted?

VAL911K9: Boss we see that - people that go for the head at the loss of a good body and movement

Dogaroo: Fortunately my friend's English Labs tend to do quite well in the ring.

PHMowgli: boss so you mean like standard vs what is winning??

Maggiemay155: thats a good topic. it affects every breed

PHMowgli: yes it does

Dogaroo: brb, I hear a foghorn. Kaija must be outside. Thought she was in.

bossanovabassets: Yes....that is part of it.

PHMowgli: excellent topic boss

bossanovabassets: But there are times when I see dogs winning that are very nice......but are of a different style than my druthers....yet I can appreciate the different style.

bossanovabassets: but wouldn't necessarily want it on my couch.

PHMowgli: boss there is an article on that in dogworld for july issue by caroline coile too I will have it by my side to refer too LOL

Maggiemay155: but is it following the standard?

VAL911K9: gottch- we have 2 styles 1 being more athletic and it's hard to see how a judge can have both in the ring and judge them

PHMowgli: maggie that is hard to say as standards are a gudeline not a sacred oath written in stone

Maggiemay155: true and open to interpretation!

VAL911K9: I have the athletic style as mine are a working dog - so sometimes get upset with the huge ones in the ring that can not move

PHMowgli: see I think that is the problem I think we have so much diversity within a written standard that we can use this topic for a month and never tire of it LOL

Dogaroo: Oh man VAL, you see that with Labs!

PHMowgli: and as we all said it applies to all breeds

bossanovabassets: I have seen dogs that technically fit the standard but are so very different from each other.....then I wonder about the intent of the standard....as opposed to the logstics of matching the standard.

PHMowgli: even for min she has greys and the racing greys and conformation greys like a different breed

PHMowgli: working BC's versus show BC's boy we can have fun with this topic LOL

Maggiemay155: but them when they cross over. look out

PHMowgli: excatly boss that is one thing we will obviously talk about the purpose of the breed and the intent of the written standard

VAL911K9: dang - we are all discussing this in our breed club right now as we are working on our standard for AKC and it's hard to word it

PHMowgli: maggie I did that in my breed I took show dogs and bred them to working dogs to create my own line of dogs so unique but does that make my dogs inferior??

PHMowgli: or superior??

PHMowgli: or equal to the masses?

Maggiemay155: no the exact opposite if done right. We need to bring back the working side to some of these breeds

PHMowgli: yes val it is very hard

VAL911K9: Mow if they can work and still fit the standard then I say you went with function and form followed it so they are functional

PHMowgli: maggie I agree but often things in our written standard are ignored too and we will be able to talk about this alot

Maggiemay155: in bouviers the working people are disgusted with the conformation people

PHMowgli: maggie in shelties we pretty much keep seperate except me LOL

bossanovabassets: form should meet function....I am afraid in bassets we have ben moving away from this....my dogs are much like what was in the ring 10 years ago....

VAL911K9: I breed for function - need to be able to move and guard if they can do this then the form will be there

bossanovabassets: I meant form should follow function.

Maggiemay155: but Val then they change the form to match someones idea of the style LOL

VAL911K9: Boss, I know it's disheartning to see dogs that look pretty but can not make it around the ring without wilting

PHMowgli: well I have to admit my dogs cannot all be shown in conformation anymore

VAL911K9: Maggie- thats what I have seen in rotties and Bordeaux - they started getting larger and unable to cover ground or work for any amount of time

Maggiemay155: least with cavaliers they are lap dogs and that about it!

PHMowgli: when I combined I bred back to the orginal style of working shelties which brought my size back down to orginal size and now some of my dogs are undersized with the new standard for conformation

Maggiemay155: is it a disqualification mowgli?

VAL911K9: My Purl is almost to small compared to most females in the ring - but she is within standard and has working titles which the others have not been able to do

PHMowgli: yes maggie now they are to be 13-16" tall where it used to be 12-15"

bossanovabassets: It's interesting...I am fairly new on the scene....but bred so that my dos look much more like old fashioned bassets....funny...those that have bred down to smaller boned dogs are now approaching me about how to get bone back into their lines....I hope that means the pendulum is going to swing back...

bossanovabassets: oops dogs look much more like..not dos.

VAL911K9: thats a big change in size for a smaller dog- that was done by your national breed club?

PHMowgli: yes val

Maggiemay155: that always happens boss. they realize they are missing something

PHMowgli: val shelties started out at 8-12 inches in the beginning

Maggiemay155: same thing happened in bouviers

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

PHMowgli: hi bert

bossanovabassets: But is the change you are seeing being done because the larger dogs function better ...or to match what has been in the ring?

bert_nr: Took me 3 tries to get here tonight

PHMowgli: bert the site is rebooting itself so we are doing open chat

Maggiemay155: actually both.

VAL911K9: Boss, they were going bigger for the ring and what was put up- the working lines stayed smaller but with good bone

PHMowgli: see same with my breed val and now t is almost impossible to tell a sheltie from a collie anymore

Dogaroo: No kidding, Mow!

PHMowgli: collies are getting smaller and shelties bigger they will meet soon

VAL911K9: what worries me the most is those that are not worrying about temperament - just if it will show nice as I feel if you loose temperament that is the hardest to get back

Dogaroo: 16" seems huge for a sheltie.. and I know someone w/ a rescue sheltie who is 17".

PHMowgli: collies have no dq so the smaller sizeis winning as they are more true to breed type and function

PHMowgli: dog they are huge

Maggiemay155: mowgli did you find that you lost your size conformaty in a litter

PHMowgli: actually magie I have more now

VAL911K9: dang - the girl I know with shelties - hers seem much smaller and I really like them

Dogaroo: It wouldn't hurt my feelings if dogs were required to prove working ability before being called Ch. (but I'm not a breeder)

PHMowgli: my last litter was 7 pups all 7 pups are withing 1" of each other

Maggiemay155: that great I would have thought there would be a problem

PHMowgli: no maggie I have larger litters healthier dogs and better sizes overall

Dogaroo: I remember the 12" shelties. One of my uncles worked sheep with small shelties.

VAL911K9: Dog- in some contries a working breed has to pass a temperament/working test to be given it's CH but in the US they do not want to acknowledge that working breeds may be dog agressive or even show the public that a dog will bite or work they forget that we teach manners too

PHMowgli: dog most of mine are 12" but I have a few who are 13" for showing LOL

PHMowgli: hey rouen

bossanovabassets: I agree with your comment about temperament....bassets should be easy going dogs. I have seen some nasty ones kept in crates at ringside.....who can't get too close to another dog if they are offlead.

Rouen: hi mowgli

PHMowgli: shelties should be shy of strangers but yet they want a dog who loves eeryone in show now

bossanovabassets: I would never breed a dog like that.....temperament is of A #1 importance to me.

Dogaroo: I had to make a hasty exit earlier. Wasp in the computer room. Kaija was trying to catch it :-( but did a perfect "leave it" & "come" *whew*

VAL911K9: well mine can be standoffish to strangers but not aggresive and dog aggression is not to be held against them - but they must have manners

Dogaroo: I've seen a couple nasty bassets recently. Makes me sad. Ones I knew as a kid were easygoing & friendly w/ everyone (or at least had "live & let live" attitude)

VAL911K9: Dog- give her a treat for that

Rouen: bit o/t.. anyone know anything about rhodesian ridgebacks.. and their trainability?

PHMowgli: boss I agree and I would not like an aggressive dog but I see no problem with a dog who backs up a step from a grabbing stranger

Maggiemay155: in cavaliers we are seeing more and more shy ones. and in the standard the first line is gay, happy temperament

Dogaroo: I sure did, Val! :-) Lunch meat!

Dogaroo: turkey breast

PHMowgli: rouen I know only about their health problems LOL

Rouen: I've read about them, mowgli

VAL911K9: ridgebacks can be sight sensative so need lots of socialization of different sights

Rouen: dermatoid sinus(SP?) hip displasia ect.

Rouen: hi blinky

bossanovabassets: I agree Mowgli....my bassets prefer to be lap puppies and your best buddy...I have a big dog....one year old..who won't even tell my pestering puppy to leave him be with her sharp baby playfull teeth.

blinky_nr: Hi there

PHMowgli: yeah maggie a lapdog like a cav should be very firendly but working dogs for farms need to be a bit more leary of strangers as they are to protect the livestock

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

PHMowgli: hi blinky

blinky_nr: Got a question maybe someone can help

PHMowgli: sure blinky we will try

Rouen: I suppose we can try blinky

VAL911K9: Mow, exactly- mine can all pass the CGC and Therapy dog tests by the time they are 3 - but are still guard dogs

blinky_nr: ok I have a Jack Russell Puppy. Well I also have birds. My birds fly one landed on the floor and the pupy went afet it!

PHMowgli: yes val that is important to me all my dogs have cgc but that does mean they run to everyone they see to be pet

Rouen: blinky, keep the pup away from the birds

VAL911K9: blinky how old is the puppy? and have you taught it a "leave it" command yet

PHMowgli: blinky that is not uncommon

PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!!!!

blinky_nr: anyways the puppy did not get the bird THANK GOD. My ?? is will this puppy ever get used to the birds?

PHMowgli: hi jana

Maggiemay155: we also have the problem the other way. A guard dog that is over friendly!!

Rouen: aren't jack russels called petterdale terrors now..

janagram_nr: Hi all

VAL911K9: Mow- exactly- mine will hold in the ring for a judge but will take a few minutes to get to know a person otherwise

janagram_nr: Parsons Russels

bossanovabassets: I have a cardigan corgi as well ....I understand the difference in temperament in herding dogs as opposed to hounds.

Dogaroo: A JRT probably will never be able to be trusted around smaller animals. They're bred to kill vermin.

PHMowgli: blinky some dogs have very high prey drives and they will always be a bit more aggressive to prey

Rouen: I was close jan

blinky_nr: Val>> I have no clue how to train this puppy and cannot afford classes for him

janagram_nr: ;-)

PHMowgli: blinky you cannot train away a strong prey drive you can only train to contain it

janagram_nr: Exactly, they are what they were bred for

PHMowgli: and also there is a ton of info on home training your puppy we have tips and training chat fridays at 10 pm right here in this room

VAL911K9: I would never trust a terrier with small animals its natural for them to want to kill them

blinky_nr: ok so any idea's on how to train him here at home?

VAL911K9: not saying can't train them - but would never trust them unsupervised

PHMowgli: blinky how old is he??

blinky_nr: do I swat the dog? or yell at him?

janagram_nr: Blinky, I just got here, what are you trying to train him?

blinky_nr: PH>> he is 4 months old.

Rouen: jan, blinkys pup gos after his birds

Rouen: goes*

blinky_nr: janagram>> trying to train him everything!

Dogaroo: According to some breeders & rescue groups, you should NEVER trust a JRT with a smaller animal, even one it was raised with.

janagram_nr: Well 1: he is just a puppy. It is your responsibilty to keep the birds away from him.....

Maggiemay155: treats and time outs?

janagram_nr: If you can't watch him, keep him crated

PHMowgli: ok blinky here is what you do put a harness or collar on pup and then put leash on harness or collar now take that leash and hook it to your belt loop

janagram_nr: or in another room

VAL911K9: personally at 4 moths old I would never have the pup off leash around the birds then you can control him if he goes after them

Dogaroo: They have killed cats they were raised with.

bossanovabassets: Separate play areas...

janagram_nr: And you don't yell or swat a puppy........

blinky_nr: OK coz I do not want to get rid of either dog or birds

Dogaroo: Hitting & yelling don't teach them anything except to avoid you.

PHMowgli: now keep that dog tethered to your side as long as you are home and when your dog does what you tell it to give it a reward food or praise

VAL911K9: birds need to be in a room that pup is not allowed into then

janagram_nr: On my clubs website there is an excellent training puppy article

Rouen: blinky is the dog lead trained?

janagram_nr: www.psessa.org

Maggiemay155: is he leash trained?

MiniSch_nr: Temperament is so important to me - I have to live with my dogs. Other breeders say I am crazy to let my males run with one another, but I have not had any problems (to date - son is 18 months, father is almost 4 years)

Dogaroo: Definitely read up on obedience training. Clicker training might be something to look into, too.

PHMowgli: if you tell the pup to sit genlty nudge its butt to floor and praise it

Dogaroo: and for a JRT I'd suggest "nothing in life is free" program

MiniSch_nr: My males love to play with the puppies - they are 4 months old and have very sharp teeth. Neither male has done more than roll them on their backs and growl at them.

Maggiemay155: what is that dogaroo?

Dogaroo: Also ask about obedience classes through local animal shelter. Sometimes they offer classes at reduced rates. Otherwise, save up for classes. You won't regret it.

blinky_nr: He knows how to sit very well and I reward him for it. I just freaked out coz I have had him for 2 weeks now and this is the first time this happened

PHMowgli: mini I have 5 males and they all run and play together

VAL911K9: Mini, I wish I could run same sex dogs together but it's a fact of life that I knew when I got these breeds so we just pair boy & girl for loose time

PHMowgli: blinky he is a baby

PHMowgli: a 4 mth old jrt is like a 5 yr old child it was new and caught his attention and it was a great toy that is animated

blinky_nr: PH>> I love him he is cute and funny

Dogaroo: JRTs are a fun breed but a lot of work.

janagram_nr: Blinky, he is just now getting comfortable in his new surroundings

blinky_nr: he was given to me my niece could not take care of him anymore

PHMowgli: think of your new puppy as a 5 yr old child when he does something wrong and remember that hitting and yelling is a waste of time and energy for both of you LOL

Dogaroo: Blinky, definitely do obedience & see if you can get him into agility. That's a good breed for agility.

PHMowgli: oh flyball

PHMowgli: or rally-O

blinky_nr: I went to petsmart and bought some toys for him they gave me a clicker but never told me what to do with it

PHMowgli: high energy dogs they are LOL

janagram_nr: well....sorry guys.......

VAL911K9: Blinky, check with the humane society if they have training classes those are usually quite affordable

janagram_nr: I thought this chat would be different

PHMowgli: yes blinky often they are free of charge

Dogaroo: Flyball! That sport was made for JRTs! :-)

blinky_nr: OK Val I never thought to check there

PHMowgli: janagram tonight our site was rebooting itself so we did open chat

janagram_nr: Ahh...I see...well........I am outa here then........

PHMowgli: we normally do dicuss showing dogs and only things that pertain to that

VAL911K9: Jana- we just got off track were talking about breed standards for the ring

PHMowgli: well guys chat is officially over anyway LOL

blinky_nr: sorry hope I did not cause anyone to leave

Dogaroo: Aww... My alpha dog was just whimpering b/c first one cat took her chair when she wanted it, then when she went back to check if the chair was free yet the OTHER cat was in it!

PHMowgli: but next weeks topic will be standard versus winning styles

VAL911K9: sounds good Mowgli

Dogaroo: I'll have a NILIF link in a minute...

Maggiemay155: nite all

PHMowgli: now I am going to run away but feel free to stay and chat amongst yourself all nite long LOL

Maggiemay155: ok I'l wait

MiniSch_nr: Val, tell me again what kind of dogs you have?

VAL911K9: ok - have a good evening and nite Mowgli

Rouen: night mow

PHMowgli: dogaroo keep that link aail for thursday nite chat LOL

MiniSch_nr: I can't imagine not being able to run the sexes together.

Dogaroo: ok, Mow :-)

VAL911K9: Mini - they are French Mastiffs - proper name id Dogue de Bordeaux was the breed used in Turner & Hooch

Maggiemay155: I can run the cavaiers but not the bouviers

VAL911K9: also I have rotties - only 1 now

MiniSch_nr: When my bitch was in California to be bred, she had issues the first couple of days I was there because she didn't want me to pet anyone else - but once I was gone she was fine.

MiniSch_nr: My friend said that occasionally her bitches would gang up on the new girl, but for the most part they co-existed and they had never seen her before.

VAL911K9: both of my breeds are known to be same sex aggressive so we just are very careful- depends on the dog also as I have ran same sex together if it's the right 2 dogs

Rouen: so no body here knows a whole bunch about rhodesians?

Maggiemay155: thanks dog

MiniSch_nr: Of course, one of my friend's bitches is her half-sister. I believe that they know they are related.

VAL911K9: nope Rouen, but have worked with a few in Obedience training

Dogaroo: Rats, I have to run. Bye all

Maggiemay155: rouen: had one in our obed. class and the fellow did quite well with him. Had some attention issues

Dogaroo: yw Maggiemay

Rouen: night dog

VAL911K9: LOL- my girl expecially hates her sisters and they will growl when crated next to each other but are well mannered in the ring and ignore each other

VAL911K9: bye Dog

Maggiemay155: nite all see you next week

VAL911K9: nite Maggie

VAL911K9: Rouen mainly I found most are sight senstive so need to feel comfortable with lots of new sights

MiniSch_nr: That is interesting. Tomorrow one of the dogs I bred is coming to stay with us while his folks were out of town. Everyone except the puppies were fine with him last time - the five 12 week old puppies surrounded him and barked.

VAL911K9: LOL- Mini it would take me at least 4 weeks to bring in a new older dog and have them safely run with one of my dogs

MiniSch_nr: At least this time the odds are better for him - I only have the 2 puppies left and they are 4 months old.

VAL911K9: I do babysit friends dogs but we just keep them seperate if they don't already know my dogs

Rouen: val, most of what I've read about rhodesians make them sound like good hiking companions and they also seem to do well in shutzhund

VAL911K9: don't get me wrong - all mine are training or are conmpeteing in obedience also so they have manners and in the ring can be off leash - I just can't let them run with other dogs

MiniSch_nr: I don't know if I could handle the dogs fighting - never have had to, knock on wood. I yell knock it off and everyone backs off if someone gets too aggressive.

VAL911K9: they are wonderful dogs- just remember what they were bred to do and they have lots of energy

VAL911K9: Mini- we don't have dog fights because we start seperating same sex when we see things might get touchy - prevention is the key with the working breeds

Rouen: I know what they were bred for.. hunting and keeping larger animals away, originated in south africa ect. ect.

VAL911K9: but remember they are a sight hound and also would chase down game and kill it so prey drive can be high in them

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: hi

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: anyone here

MiniSch_nr: Right now in the living room with me, I have an 8 1/2 year old bitch (alpha), her almost 4 year old daughter, her almost 4 year old son, my first show bitch (6 years old). Then I have an 18 month old male and the two bitch puppies that are out of my first show bitch and the son of the alpha bitch.

VAL911K9: I love the 2 ridgebacks that I train with - they are doing carting and obedience plus 1 is a show dog

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: hello?

Rouen: well val, so far I've come to either rhodesians, weirmaraners, vizslas or staffies.. and I know you know what they were all bred for

MiniSch_nr: The worst thing that happens is when one of the puppies tries to steal a hoof from my pregnant female - she is a little testy right now.

Rouen: hi chihuahua

VAL911K9: LOL Mini - I have my old male rottie in the bedroom killing a bone and my bitch mastiff is under my desk and her 2 yr old sons in in the living room killing a stuffed toy- I just keep the boys seperated

Rouen: someone suggested stardaed schnuazers but their cotas would just be too much on an 8 month hike

VAL911K9: wow Rouen - of those they are all great breeds but my first choice would be the Viszla or the ridgeback

MiniSch_nr: Can't imagine living with that many dogs that big.

Rouen: wb chihuahua

VAL911K9: Wiems make good companions too the Staffie might be to dog aggessive to take out where there might be strange dogs

Rouen: lol mini.. I only need one dog.. just looking at breeds

VAL911K9: Mini- I am down a dog as normally have a female rottie also - lost mine last year and am waiting for a new pup now

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: THANK U ROUEN AT LEST U R NICE

MiniSch_nr: What are you looking for in a breed - size, temperament, upkeep, etc.

Rouen: val, staffies can be socialized, puppihood would be spent on socialization and training

VAL911K9: thats true- but I have handled them and when they get mature the dog aggression can come out - not that I don't like them just have to keep that in mind that it might be there when they mature

Rouen: mini I need a hiking companion, short coat med energy with an off switch when the hikes done, shedding doesn't matter, size as small as possible and it needs to be able to tell friend from foe

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: what critters do u have rouen

Rouen: a few people have suggested training the dogs(w/e breed) shutzhund

VAL911K9: you might look into some of the hunting breeds also as they make good hiking partners

Rouen: heh shihuahua, 2 cockers, 2 ducks, 2 budgies, 1 cockatiel 1 cat 4 turtles and fish

Rouen: chihuahua* my typings off

MiniSch_nr: I am a little prejudiced, but one of the puppies from my first litter (the dog that is coming to visit tomorrow) goes on daily hikes with his owners - they live close to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs.

Rouen: well vizslas weirmaraners and ridgebacks are all hunting dogs

VAL911K9: well yes and no- I was meaning more like a retriever and ridgebacks are a hound

Rouen: all the retrievers I've met have no off switch

Rouen: I'm sure that depends on the breed though

VAL911K9: that and the bloodline too

Rouen: all the labs I've met just go and never seem to stop till they die

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: u have chihuahuas

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: rouen

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: ????????????????

VAL911K9: most breeders can tell you if their dogs are off the wall and would be good for you or not

Rouen: no chihuahua, I have cockers

VAL911K9: Mini - when is your bitch due?

MiniSch_nr: End of September

VAL911K9: then you got some time

VAL911K9: I will be breeding my mastiff in the fall - will be driving her 1300 miles to the male as we tried AI last time and did not get a take

MiniSch_nr: Really excited - She is my only black and I bred her to a really nice black male. I might get black and silver's too because he carries the gene - won't know if she carries unless she throws a black and silver.

VAL911K9: oops meant 1000 miles

VAL911K9: - the only color we worry about with these is the mask color -

MiniSch_nr: I drove over 1200 miles and then flew out and brought her back as carry on luggage

Rouen: time for me to go, cya

MiniSch_nr: nite rouen

VAL911K9: LOL- mine cost a mint to fly as cargo so I just drive them

VAL911K9: plus I am scared of flying them in the hold

MiniSch_nr: I bet - and I just don't feel comfortable with them flying as cargo - heard too many horror stories of them being left in the son on a baggage cart or ending up in another city.

MiniSch_nr: that is sun, not son

VAL911K9: that and the danger of there is dry ice in any cargo

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: see this pic www.gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.pl?photo=154441

VAL911K9: next spring will drive cross country for nationals with 2 of them

MiniSch_nr: What is the danger of dry ice?

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: its cute

VAL911K9: gives off a bad gas - can't remember which one

VAL911K9: they are not suppose to put dogs on if there is dry ice for flowers etc being shipped

VAL911K9: the picture did not open

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: sorry

MiniSch_nr: Reason I asked is we brought my first miniature schnauzer back in an ice chest filled with dry ice - we took her with us on vacation because she was dying of cancer and there was no way I was going to leave her home. She died the day before we were leaving and I was determined to bring her hom.

VAL911K9: trying it again

MiniSch_nr: The cooler was on the back seat of my car.

VAL911K9: really? I was always told not to put them with dry ice

VAL911K9: also had a friend that her rottie's crate was dropped and the dog got loose on the runway - he came back but am afraid of things like that

MiniSch_nr: Val, she was already dead when we packed her in the dry ice - I had never heard that living things were not supposed to ride where dry ice was. That was my question.

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/index.pl?photo=134379 see that one

VAL911K9: oh- yeah it gives off a gas so need to be careful

MiniSch_nr: Because she rode home in the car with us in that cooler.

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: its so cute

Jean_nr: Hello! Can I join in?

MiniSch_nr: Will remember that.

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: yes iguess

VAL911K9: well I would think a car would leak air - a plane is sealed tighter

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: jean see the picture

VAL911K9: cute puppy

MiniSch_nr: Yes, that is probably true too.

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: that one looks like mine

Jean_nr: The pom by your name?

VAL911K9: but then since they charge by weight and my smallest dog is 110 I can't afford to ship

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: no scoll above and click the green

MiniSch_nr: My largest dog is less than 20 - and she is overweight and on a diet.

MiniSch_nr: On the average, mine run between 15 and 17.

VAL911K9: LOL- I had a toy poodle as my first competition dog and handle a cattle dog and a couple of smaller breeds but have to remind myself that they are small and can break

MiniSch_nr: And there is no way that one of yours is going to fit under the seat in a serpa bag

VAL911K9: I handle my vets pug and he is always reminding me to not break his dog

VAL911K9: we do fly pups under the seat but the poor things are crammed in

VAL911K9: my boy Quest was jsut shy of 2 lbs when he was born and is over 140 now and still not filled out

MiniSch_nr: I imagine that can be hard to remember. My friends have giant schnauzers and my minis love to play with them - but some of there dogs are dog aggressive so we have to pick and choose.

MiniSch_nr: She used to have mini's too.

VAL911K9: yeah my male mastiff is good with little dogs but we watch him close as afraid he will step on the m

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: http://chat.pethobbyist.com/index.pl?photo=149691

VAL911K9: but when I get to a show and have to haul those 700 crates - I do look longingly at the small dogs

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: see that one

Jean_nr: Yes, I looked at the pictures. Very cute! Are they all yours?

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: its the cutest

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: no

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: they look like mine

MiniSch_nr: Yes, I am planning to go back to California in late November to have ears done and also plan to take 2 or 3 dogs to show. I just stack up those 200 crates.

Jean_nr: Yours is the one with the sweater on?

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: no

VAL911K9: I am in Ca - right now it's hot as I am in the desert will drive to Mich for natioanls in the spring

MiniSch_nr: Where in CA?

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: none are mine i said they look like mine

VAL911K9: east of San Diego by 90 miles almost to the Az border

VAL911K9: where are you at?

Jean_nr: Oh, well yours must be very nice. Do you show them, or breed?

MiniSch_nr: OK, south of where I am going - I am going near SF.

MiniSch_nr: I live in Denver, CO

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: does anyone have rabbits

VAL911K9: was up there in April for the breeding that did not work out was beautiful

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: ?????????????????????????????????????

VAL911K9: no rabbots here just the wild ones that eat my lawn

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: lol

VAL911K9: I have been thinking about doing some of the Co shows next year

MiniSch_nr: Yes, I really like Colorado. Don't see any reason to ever move out of state.

VAL911K9: oops meant SF for the breeding

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: i breed and show rabbits !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

VAL911K9: all we have is jack rabbits wild

MiniSch_nr: My email is abacusoos@earthlink.net - if you get out this way, give me a holler.

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: jersey woolys

MiniSch_nr: Were you at Skansen's for the breeding?

VAL911K9: I will- right now only showing the mastiffs in UKC and rare breed as we are just going AKC but when I get the new rott pup will be back in AKC

VAL911K9: no I stayed in Pleasanton and used Dr Cain the repo specialist

VAL911K9: was just south of SF

MiniSch_nr: I think I am going to try UKC in September with my puppies. They really won't be in coat, but they will be in the 3-6 mo class and it would be good socialization for them.

Jean_nr: I must have missed the breeding chat, right? Or am I just in the wrong room?

VAL911K9: I do like the UKC shows for training - no pro handlers and everyone is really willing to work with the pups

MiniSch_nr: Yes, the breeding chat was about an hour and a half ago

VAL911K9: Jean that was about 2 hrs ago

Jean_nr: So what chat is this about?

VAL911K9: just open chat - we stayed on after breeding and show shat

MiniSch_nr: Just winding down from the Dog Shot chat

VAL911K9: LOL- neither of us can type

MiniSch_nr: Dog Show I mean

*chihuahuagirl*_nr: hi steel header!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MiniSch_nr: Yep, the pups are trying to help me. Earlier tonight they dug at my keyboard and got two keys off - found them and got them back on.

Jean_nr: Oh, guess I'm a day late and a dollar short on both then! LOL

MiniSch_nr: Now my pregnant bitch is protecting me.

VAL911K9: well I better get going - have to potty dogs - mine just keep me from sitting up to my desk

MiniSch_nr: She won't let the puppies

MiniSch_nr: get to me.

VAL911K9: Jean its at 9 ET and 6 PT

MiniSch_nr: Nice to chat to you Val.

VAL911K9: thank Mini - was great meeting you - will see you all next week

MiniSch_nr: night everybody

VAL911K9: nite all

Jean_nr: Ok. Good night
