Transcript: Dog Breeding Chat Tuesday, August 31, 2004: Showing At Specialties PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties PHChristy: ok folks, I'm going to head out and feed and walk dogs before it gets dark... have a great Showdog Chat and I'll see you next week at Dog Breeding Chat!! PHMowgli: my vet will let me bring in a fecal and take my word for it as I have used him for yrs and yrs and I have a great relatonship with him but no way for any one else or a new client MiniSch_nr: Very interested in this topic - showing at specialties. PHMowgli: ok so what is so different for showing at a speciality rather than an all breed show? bert_nr: More classes PHMowgli: bert also you only have your breed so you will almost always have a better lineup of dogs competeing against you PHMowgli: also you will have more pro's which means better grooming and higher quality handling itself typically bert_nr: We get alot of "extra" events too PHMowgli: yes plus the concessions are centered around your breed not all breeds bert_nr: We don't get that many pros for our breed. Probably about 5 of them handling the top dogs PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties PHMowgli: ah but you said it the top dogs MiniSch_nr: At our specialties we often have classes that at other shows would be majors. PHMowgli: almost always you have a major at a speciality bert_nr: Yeh, but unfortuantely those "top dogs" are usually not the best dogs Ruby_nr: Those are the shows that tell you how your breeding program measures up. bert_nr: Oh for sure Mow PHMowgli: ruby you should have been here last week when discussed style ( fads) versus standards LOL PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties MiniSch_nr: I usually enter my puppies in the puppy class, but for the upcoming specialty I will have two puppies the same age that are both very nice. What classes would you enter them in? bert_nr: At Carlisle two years ago Kyrie ended up stand 5th in the bredby class of 32....... that's usually the entire Sam entry around here Ruby_nr: Yes, you see a lot of the fads at specialities too. Too many in fact bert_nr: Actually larger bert_nr: It would depend on the puppy Mini PHMowgli: brb sorry guys gotta potty bert_nr: I'ven know pups to be entered in Open because they were large and mature and I've seen them finish that way Ruby_nr: I think the only good thing about specialities is you get to showcase your puppies and advertise your stud dog. bert_nr: We are leading off with a packhike on Monday MiniSch_nr: I know that I will enter one in the puppy class - will be barely 9 months old. bert_nr: Agility Tuesday Obedience and Futurity Wed. PHMowgli: ok back bert_nr: Oops forgot the Herding is on Mon & Tues. Weightpulll Mon nite for Novice and a sanctioned pull Tues nite PHMowgli: oh sounds fun bert ours runs for a week straight also MiniSch_nr: Probably will enter the other in Bred-by. Do not usually like to compete against myself, but I want to enter their sire in Stud Dog so both must be entered in classes. bert_nr: I've got three in Agility this year and two in Obedience MiniSch_nr: I am not going to make it to our National this year because my bitch is due that week. PHMowgli: I only have merlin entered this yr in agility and obedience also no conformation this yr for me MiniSch_nr: Wow Bert - do you run them all yourself? PHMowgli: but Ihave to say specialties are a great place to evaluate dogs you may want to use in your breeding programs also MiniSch_nr: Yes, I always like to go to the specialties because you often have your chance to get your hands on the dogs that you might want to use later. PHMowgli: and you can learn from some of the top handlers of the breed handling and grooming techniques as well as take in seminars and other activites PHMowgli: Once again I want to remind everyone if you have a brag yell out to share it with us bert_nr: Sorry was gone for a moment ..... yes I run them all bert_nr: Kyrie runs EX and her littermate Tally is just starting Nov Their dam is running in Open JWW Preferred this year ....... it will probably be her last year to compete.......... but I thought that last year MiniSch_nr: I am just starting agility. I love it and so does my boy. Missed a lot of classes when the last litter of pups was born because they were premature. Hoping to be able to attend more classes and start competing. PHMowgli: agility is so much fun for the dogs bert_nr: BTW their ages are 9 , 9 & 14 my baby at 19months isn't competing for a couple years yet. PHMowgli: merlin just turned 1 yr old on the 8th of august MiniSch_nr: I stay pretty close to home when I have new pups - don't even go to the shows because I am afraid I would bring something home so I won't be able to get really serious until end of November. MiniSch_nr: My bitch is due the end of September. PHMowgli: I am same way mini bert_nr: brb PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties PHMowgli: if you have a brag to share yell it out to us MiniSch_nr: I am a little worried about our specialty in Chicago in February - heard they are having a run of distemper there. PHMowgli: ok I have a brag Squeeker an 8 yr old bitch bred herself and I am due to have a litter on oct 5th PHMowgli: mini but that is not till feb and if your dogs are vaccinated they will be safe PHMowgli: no I did not plan this breeding it was an accident bert_nr: HA ha ha......Mow MiniSch_nr: Is it a good breeding - one you would have done later but she beat you to it. PHMowgli: squeeker was in my bitch pen and merlin was in agility run he jumped off the a-frame into the bitch pen and did his thing by the time I ran through gates it was too late PHMowgli: mini I would have done the breeding had she been younger but I do not like to breed 8 yr old bitches bert_nr: She who said she was done breeding..........lol bert_nr: Smart boy that one...... MiniSch_nr: Yes, I didn't catch that. I don't like to breed them that old either. I just spayed the mother of my 4 1/2 month old puppies - 3rd litter, she is 6 1/2 and she had such a hard time this time with her milk not coming in. MiniSch_nr: Good luck with your girl. PHMowgli: bert I actually had 2 litters planned yet now I get 3 LOL PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties PHMowgli: hey ya dc dogcaps: Howdy folks bert_nr: Hi DC MiniSch_nr: howdy bert_nr: oops didn't mean to yell PHMowgli: I am still planning the last 2 litters for dec bert then I retired honestly would I lie to you LOL dogcaps: i will forgive you this time bert bert_nr: Yeh yeh yeh............ well you can send me a pup to keep Sir company since you'll have extras...LOL PHMowgli: Welcome to ShowDog Chat!! Tonights topic showing at specialties dogcaps: howdy chesters GAChesters: Hi room! bert_nr: Hi Chesters GAChesters: hey DC PHMowgli: tell us your brags if you got em GAChesters: howdy bert! GAChesters: OH geez PHMowgli: sure bert no problem but it will be a bitch pup LOL bert_nr: geez/ GAChesters: Thursday one of my kids took WB at her very first show from the 6-9 puppy class GAChesters: got her first 2 points dogcaps: cool ga bert_nr: ? having punctuation trouble LOL GAChesters: Friday her littermate took WD MiniSch_nr: Yea - congratulations Chesters bert_nr: I LOVE bitches......... much better than those sneaky fence jumping males GAChesters: Saturday the littermate took WD and BOV from the 6-9 puppy class beating the #1 TMT. A bitch pup I own got WB and her first major dogcaps: just wanted to pop in and say howdy since I haven't been here for a while. ya'll take care! GAChesters: Sunday. The bitch I own took WB + BOV beating the 2 top 10 specials including the #1 TMT MiniSch_nr: I bet you were are on cloud nine PHMowgli: ha ha bert LOL GAChesters: still haven't quite hit the ground minisch PHMowgli: is that all GAC?? no championships finished in one weekend??? PHMowgli: by the way everyone but GAC that was a joke GAChesters: HAHA hardly Mow. They weren't 5pointers unfortunately. But they all have points now PHMowgli: meanwhile we will have to keep pulling on your string to keepyou grounded LOL GAChesters: so 2 I bred and 1 I own had a fabulouso weekend MiniSch_nr: don't you just love it when the babies win - I will always remember my first home bred champion winning a 5 point major at our local specialty - after my mentor told me that he was just a baby and I couldn't expect him to win. He finished at 10 months old. GAChesters: I pulled my special and ended up ringside the entire weekend enjoying the wins with the owners GAChesters: It was just as good as being in the ring myself PHMowgli: yeah but beau is sick GAChesters: Yea poor kid. He's eating marginally better, but still not great PHMowgli: I like to watch almost as much as I like to win LOL PHMowgli: but winning is always the most fun LOL GAChesters: well it was nerve wracking! LOL But I can deal with that kind of stress MiniSch_nr: I have high hopes for his daughters - they are 4 1/2 months old. PHMowgli: oh awesome mini PHMowgli: hey where did DC go LOL MiniSch_nr: Is beau your special? PHMowgli: come one everyone talk to me bert_nr: Eating my supper PHMowgli: yes beau is GAC's special he has some tummy problems from fire ants MiniSch_nr: Oh no - did he try to eat them? bert_nr: did he eat them or get bitten? PHMowgli: he apparently did eat some PHMowgli: and he has bites on his face too PHMowgli: which is why he had to be pulled from the show PHMowgli: he was not eating well for the past week since he gotten into an ant hill MiniSch_nr: GAC - are you min pins? GAChesters: oh crud sorry folks GAChesters: he got bitten then didn't seem to recover very well even after he healed GAChesters: the fire ants messed up his whole system even after they healed GAChesters: we are giving him antibiotics and something to reset his tummy GAChesters: and THEN 2 of my girls are coming into season. Poor kid is a mess! haha MiniSch_nr: Wow, where did he get into fire ants PHMowgli: GAC I figured the storms had you booted LOL GAChesters: Backyard mini. Even tho we treat the mounds, the fire ants live under the grass. They like to dig it up and snuffle under it. MiniSch_nr: I am sure glad we don't get them here - we don't even have fleas bert_nr: Storms?? what storms?? for a change today was gorgeous........ mid 70's breezy GAChesters: They are evil and mean bert_nr: Is Frances going to hit you Chesters? GAChesters: I gotta check the storm track folks. Looks like we might be getting a hirycane PHMowgli: ok guys we need a topic for next week GAChesters: could be bert....coming too danged close for comfort GAChesters: It looks like it will hit south but then swing around and kiss us from the inland side bert_nr: Did Charlie get you? GAChesters: No. Charlie was on the Gulf side. I am on the ocean side MiniSch_nr: I am not looking forward to my little girls going into season - starting to watch them and my males very closely because don't want an accidental breeding - I have their full brother and their father. May have to send them off to visit friends cause it looks like they will be in season and my bitch will be having pups about the same time. GAChesters: Just barely barely into GA PHMowgli: oh Gac you better e-mail me to let me know everythingis ok as soon as possible after it goes through there GAChesters: IF it continues on the same path, Mow I will load up the dogs tomorrow and amscray PHMowgli: next weeks topic?? come on people give me some hints here PHMowgli: good chesters GAChesters: I am not waiting around only to get stuck in the hideous traffic GAChesters: I split my house and yard mini, but the boys still can smell......LOL bert_nr: I know friends in FL are semi packed so they can just grab their dogs and go GAChesters: no oops here thanks MiniSch_nr: Good luck GAC - my hope is that it doesn't come close to you, but better to be safe and be packed than sorry. GAChesters: yea bert, I filled up the motorhome tonight. Will load all the crates tomorrow based on weather PHMowgli: Chesters just head up here PHMowgli: topics?? still waiting bert_nr: They stayed though Charlie but sent their human kids to grandma further inland. GAChesters: http://firstcoastnews.com/weather/stormtrackupdate.aspx GAChesters: this is not good MiniSch_nr: I was in Wilmington, NC when Hugo hit just 90 miles down the coast. I will never forget. GAChesters: sure Mow......LOL I'll swing through New York and then onto your house GAChesters: my little dog in Grand Rapids is due to fly here tomorrow night!! eek PHMowgli: how about if we do camping at shows?? GAChesters: I got a gripe from this weekend's shows GAChesters: one of the prof handlers was in group grandstanding big time. Kept blocking one of the owner handlers. It made us all mad MiniSch_nr: We waited too long and couldn't get off the island the hotel was on. Storm took the stairs out that went down to the beach. Spent 3 days with partial power. Never been so scared in my life. PHMowgli: oh no chesters GAChesters: oh geez I bet mini GAChesters: I went up to that owner handler and told her to feed the prof handlers dog! hahaha it was after group tho PHMowgli: ha ha GAChesters: If ya'll looked at the map link, I am just barely north of Jacksonville, FL GAChesters: Right on the coast (Gulp) bert_nr: Who was the hanler GAChesters: I dunno her name...... bert_nr: handler bert_nr: I tried to look and it said error MiniSch_nr: What breed - we can look it up. Good to know what you are in for GAChesters: I doubt she was listed in the catalog as agent mini bert_nr: eek it just came up........ it looks like it's going straight up the middle of the state GAChesters: www.firstcoastnews.com then click on stormtrack GAChesters: yea....not good bert PHMowgli: the map froze me LOL GAChesters: I am just barely across the GA state line north of Jacksonville......right on the water GAChesters: maybe 2 miles from shore PHMowgli: wow it is gonna hit you monday chesters GAChesters: yea--isn't that something mow.....a day later than they thought earlier bert_nr: maybe being inland will kill it fast GAChesters: which means I gotta get outta here before south florida evacuates GAChesters: they evacuated almost the entire eastern seaboard coupla years ago--it was a nightmare bert_nr: Do you have somewher to go? GAChesters: the roads were at a total standstill for hours and hours GAChesters: well ironically bert, I am entered in a show this weekend in Raleigh, NC PHMowgli: dang yeah leave tomorrow better safe than sorry GAChesters: unfortunately hubby has to stay here until the base has its mandatory evacuation bert_nr: Yeh well you better keep coming north cause it looks like it could be following you GAChesters: luckily Raliegh is far enough inland to miss the worse of it PHMowgli: yes but at least you and dogs can get out bert_nr: I'm just south of Lake Erie.......... pretty safe from hurricanes here. GAChesters: haha true bert. PHMowgli: ok guys how about first aid at a dog show?? for next weeks topic?? bert_nr: We just get the backwash........ GAChesters: oh geez more show news from perry GAChesters: apparently a rott attacked Dr Smith (the one armed judge) and bit his good hand GAChesters: meanwhile the owners had a bitch in a crate ringside......WHELPING MiniSch_nr: That sounds like a good topic - first aid at a dog show. bert_nr: Ooooo that's BAD GAChesters: animal control + cops showed up......poor Dr Smith was in group all bandaged up PHMowgli: OMG well I do not like him anyway he is a rotten judge LOL GAChesters: he is good to me, Mow :) bert_nr: What show was that at Chesteres GAChesters: Perry, GA bert PHMowgli: GAC he is the judge that pinched Ruegers testicle GAChesters: I hope that owner got a huge bench fine and suspension GAChesters: oh eww mow bert_nr: Oh..........lol.......... I thought perry was a person GAChesters: hahahah. 4 day show bert MiniSch_nr: Wow - bring a bitch in whelp to a show. Must not care about their dogs at all - that is asking for a bunch of dead puppies. GAChesters: and ringside to boot! PHMowgli: the judge has a tendedcy to pinch males and he prolly deserved to be bit but now the dog is DQ'd for lif GAChesters: I don't know details Mow I wasn't there bert_nr: Suppose I'd better go check my email I'm supposed to move a rescue this week. GAChesters: ok folks--me going to get up early and see the weather and start packing in earnest bert_nr: Shiowing Frances on TV now PHMowgli: hey we still need a topic MiniSch_nr: First Aid? GAChesters: first aid........ PHMowgli: no-one leaves this room without a topic ont he table for next week bert_nr: I thought you picked one GAChesters: I got nailed by fire ants this weekend also :( GAChesters: my feet got approx 45 bites. We counted bert_nr: Fire ants deterrants!!! GAChesters: there was a mound, but it had been treated and I didn't go near it MiniSch_nr: Must be the weekend for dog bites - apparently a skiperkee was bitten by an Irish Wolf Hound at the Elgin shows - had to be put down PHMowgli: ok first aid at dog shows how does everyone feel about that?? bert_nr: k PHMowgli: wow mini GAChesters: wow. MiniSch_nr: Everyone bring their list of what should go in their first aid kit for the dog show. GAChesters: well I will try and be here PHMowgli: yes good idea mini PHMowgli: ok everyone lets all head out to ur doggies bert_nr: Nite nite MiniSch_nr: I will also try to be there - I start a new job tomorrow so who knows what my schedule will be.
