PHFang: Do you show IABCA shows Val?

VAL911K9: plus was owner breeder handled

PHFang: Oh those are the sweetest ones!

VAL911K9: I do some of them plus ARBA and UKC and AKC with the rotts

PHMowgli: I have a brag also Merlin is down to only 1 qualify needed for his cdx

rexy5711: Guys, I am not ignoring you, just trying to figure the stuff out here, lol

VAL911K9: wow Mow thats wonderful

PHMowgli: rexy so what breed do you have?

bert_nr: I did trophies for the Wisonsin Samoyed Specialty which was a week ago. I'm not getting feedback on the "stuff" and apparently they were a big hit

VAL911K9: I miss the obed ring as the mastiffs are not real flashy there so am looking for a new rottie pup

PHMowgli: bert I know why they absolutely gorgeous

rexy5711: Only one is showing right now, but the other one will start in September, my baby

bert_nr: I'm NOW getting feedback......

PHFang: LOL Rexy try that again......

VAL911K9: Fang do you show with AIBCA?

PHMowgli: with your talent you should be working constanty makingus pics LOL

bert_nr: Now if they would pay me for them ........lol

rexy5711: Try what again?

PHFang: Yes Val I do show IABCA

VAL911K9: what breed? I am on the west coast

PHFang: Rexy you whispered your breed to me instead of in the chat room

PHMowgli: yeah what is your breed rexy LOL

PHFang: Val, my boy has taken 2 Reserve Best Puppy in shows and 1 Reserve Bred-By in Show

PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Topic is Trkcs and Secrets of Handling!

PHFang: *tricks

bert_nr: Thanks Mow. It's always nice to hear nice stuff back

rexy5711: Sorry guys, can you hear me now?

PHMowgli: rexy not to worry we all do that LOL

VAL911K9: wow Fang thats great

PHFang: thanks Val that was super fun

PHMowgli: rexy doing great

PHMowgli: hi nancy

PHFang: Rexy is my Texas Pal...teehee I got her in here tonight.

PHFang: Ya'll welcome Rexy!!

PHMowgli: by the way for all you not familiar with our rooms if a person names is highlighted you will be whispering to them what ever you type

rexy5711: LOL, I feel like a dope. OK, I show Toy Manchester Terriers, well, one right now, the baby is going to start in September

PHMowgli: Hi rexy

rexy5711: Thanks Fang!

rexy5711: Hiya Mow

VAL911K9: so for show trick- anyone here show large dogs and do you find judges are sometimes more impressed with a large breed that is more animated -

PHFang: Val they want to see animation on all breeds

PHMowgli: so rexy do you have a TMT of fangs?

rexy5711: Not yet, but sometime in the future I am hoping I will, wink wink

PHMowgli: val I think they like animation period

PHMowgli: me too rexy LOL

VAL911K9: well - I have had a couple judges comment that they have never seen a mastiff that jumps for food

PHFang: Ok this is better....this is my dog LOL

rexy5711: My first one is a little Texan, the puppy bitch is from Kansas

PHMowgli: bella

PHFang: I think it's hard to get animation on black dogs period

PHMowgli: I do too fang

rexy5711: OK, wait, what do you mean by animation?

PHMowgli: my breed comes in all colors shelties for those who do not know

PHFang: Facial expression, ears up

PHFang: Up on their toes and demanding from the judge

VAL911K9: my biych had jusges calling her a Kanga-dog since she spends so much time in the air when stacked

PHMowgli: rexy that means happy bouncy really show off dogs

rexy5711: Oh, that, I dunno, Chance does pretty well on that

rexy5711: LOL, too funny

VAL911K9: dang was suppose to say bitch mastiff

PHMowgli: ok how can keep a dog from turning its head when tabled?

rexy5711: Maybe that is what the judge in OK City liked about Chance, he is much more animated than the others were

PHFang: ugh good question Mow....solve that and we got Beau fixed

PHFang: It does help Rexy

PHMowgli: I learned yrs ago if you pinch fur just below ear they will be awesome on table

VAL911K9: well I can't help - can't lift mine on the table LOL

PHFang: No fur Mow

PHMowgli: it distracts them from lookng at judge behind them

rexy5711: Cool, might try the ear pinching, gently, I am sure, lol

PHMowgli: fang did you try pinchig his cheek

rexy5711: How about if your dog leans into you on the table?

PHFang: no Mow, I've been busy doing the death grip under his chin.....LOL

PHFang: TMTs like to do that rexy

VAL911K9: we grab the bigger dogs by the lip to keep the head from turning if needed

PHMowgli: rexy I had a dog that did the lean I stepped away and let him fall off table that solved that problem LOL

PHFang: I've seen them grab ears too Val

VAL911K9: up that works - mine have more lips to grab

rexy5711: LOL, I could try that, but not sure Chance would want back on the table

rexy5711: But there is a trick a friend of mine showed me

PHMowgli: we pinch fur beneath ear on cheek but I have lots of fur to grab LOL

PHFang: LOL Ross just fell off bout 12 times before I gave up that idea

PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Topic is Tricks and Secrets of Handling!

PHMowgli: hi ya DC

PHFang: Hi dog!!!!!!!

dogcaps: Howdy ya'll!

rexy5711: Hi Dog

PHMowgli: yeah and now ross hates the table part of showing cause he thinks he could fall if the table is not real steady

PHFang: No, Mow he likes the table

rexy5711: OK, wait, trying to figure out how to explain it

PHMowgli: that was for all the dogs who are clicker trained

PHMowgli: wow how did you do that fang mine after I let them fall are real unsteady on tables LOL

PHFang: Ok so what do you do when somebody constantly runs up on you from behind

rexy5711: you put your hand like a make believe pistol, your index finger will touch the back inside part of his wanker (sorry, odd choise of words, lol), and then the thumb kind of closes down on the skin of the hind leg. That sounds weird, lol, never mind

PHFang: We're talking Ross Mow....beautiful but not a brain cell alive in his head. Still waiting for Fed Ex to pull up with his brain

rexy5711: Hmmmm, more than likely they are doing it on purpose, the running up, right?

PHMowgli: well that is common in my breed fang to have them run up your butt LOL

rexy5711: Mean Mom Fang!

VAL911K9: so what do you guys do if you have one of those handlers in the ring that keeps moving forward in the lineup to block view of other dogs?

PHFang: yes it's on purpose

dogcaps: brb

PHFang: Val, I step in front of them

VAL911K9: I tell them to back off that my dog is bigger than theres

PHMowgli: val I often will step out more into ring with my dog

VAL911K9: we have one handler thats real bad and have ended up in the middle of the ring with her

rexy5711: I only had that happen once, and I asked them to please keep their distance

PHFang: I tell them that my dog isn't particuarly friendly and they will likely get snapped at if they let their dog get too close.

rexy5711: Good one!

PHMowgli: and as far as them running up my butt I just slow down my pace a bit to really show off my smooth slow trot while their dogs usually trip themselves trying to slow down

PHFang: About that time, my dog will turn around to look at them (just out of curiosity) and it skeers em...LOL

rexy5711: HA HA, so they actually buy it

bert_nr: Tell them that I heard the dog behind them is agressive so they spend most of their time looking the other way?

PHMowgli: if you crowd me I will crowd back and I get even not mad

PHFang: hey good one bert!

rexy5711: Kekekeke

VAL911K9: my dogs move very fast for a large breed so rarely are they on top of me tipp we stop then I make sure I have extra room in front of me to move up after they are stacked

PHMowgli: I like that one bert

PHFang: yea I do that too Val, but then they always move up more and crowd me

VAL911K9: I like that bert - will steal that from you

rexy5711: Yep, the moving back is a good idea,=

PHFang: Me 2 Bert

PHFang: I find more problems in the breed ring than in group

rexy5711: Wait, if we tell Bert we are stealing it, then it isn't stealing, lol

bert_nr: Actually if you get an idiot behind you stop well back from the dog in front of you then wait until the guy behind you is in a perfect stack and move your dog ahead

PHMowgli: with my breed it is common to see all handlers stacking and movng constanly i ring

PHFang: We have a lot of owner/handlers in my breed. They either don't know what they are doing, or they know perfectly well

VAL911K9: also my dogs are very safe in the ring so sometimes if they keep crowding I will swing my dog in a circle and they will back off when they get nercous

PHMowgli: val yes we do that constantly

VAL911K9: my males are ok but I have to keep my bitch away from the others so can't swing her around

PHFang: They will crowd up real close and then wave their head over my dogs back supposedly trying to get their dogs attention. If I move up so do they

PHMowgli: or I step out into a ring a bit or back towards ring side a bit it throws you off line and draws the judges eyes t o yu

PHFang: So when they do that, I turn around and stack my dog in reverse--that usually messes them up

bert_nr: I ended up between two Sammies that were known for being dog aggressive outside the ring once. The idiot woman behind me kept moving up to talk and I kept trying to inch Tally away from her dog and avoid the dog in front of me........ nightmare

PHFang: oh yea bert that would be scary

PHMowgli: bert that iscommon in lots of breeds

bert_nr: Tally was quite young then and I didn't want him being jumped.

PHMowgli: and any sign of aggression andboth dogs are dq'd

rexy5711: Kids, my service is not doing so good tonight, forgive me if I disappear

bert_nr: He's still a sweet boy and plays with Suir

PHMowgli: of course terriers can spar and that is allowed

VAL911K9: yeah young dogs I will protect at all costs to keep them from being jumped

PHMowgli: me too val

PHFang: terriers, yes, but not TMTs Mow. Manchesters are not a sparring terrier

PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Topic is Tricks and Secrets of Handling!

PHFang: Hi Rebel

PHMowgli: my collie at one show stepped in a hole in ground and he hated the pro behind fromt haat point on he blamed her LOL

bert_nr: Alot of the breeds they now spar were hunted in packs so also shouldn't be sparred

VAL911K9: most of the time in working breeds judges will make people space out since they are known to be not dog friendly

PHMowgli: hi rebel

Rebel V_nr: HI there

PHFang: I prefer when judges send you around one at a time so you can gait your dog the way they gait best

PHFang: Not getting left in the dust or running up on somebody

VAL911K9: me too Fang - a down and back is not enough room for a big dog to move properly

PHMowgli: me toofang but I do not mind going aroun altogether if I am allowed to go at my pace which I do

PHFang: So does it look bad or good if you are doing a go around and there's a huge gap between you and the dog in front?

VAL911K9: I am with you Mow - I will wait to start out and give myself the room we neeed to move well

PHMowgli: I tend to hold up the line in my breed I do not think most people show their dogs are right speed in my breed they try to run them rather than trot them

PHMowgli: me too val

PHFang: me too Val

VAL911K9: I think it shows you are doing what is best for your dog - mione alwasy catch up half way around

PHMowgli: it does not matter fang as we are there to show dogs not how close or how well we show with other handlers

PHFang: Funny how judges are always griping that ppl move the dogs too fast. But I watched GPs one day and all but one were RUNNING around the ring. One lady gaited her dog nicely and looked like the odd man out

PHMowgli: it is our jobs as owner handlers to show our dogs to the their best

PHMowgli: yes fang and often that one is penalized butoften they get winners too

PHFang: true Mow

PHFang: So what do you do on the go-round when you end up getting stuck behind the table? Sorry Val you prolly don't have this problem

PHMowgli: well I have moved myself back or up and leave behind the table space empty

VAL911K9: well I do for BiS

nancy_nr: I never get stuck behind the table I was taught never to stop there i always stop baCK away from it ,I never let the table hide my dog.

PHMowgli: my breed is so rare to win groupBIS is not an isue for me LOL

PHMowgli: nancy what breed do you have?

VAL911K9: well if we go AKC it will be that way for a while for me too

nancy_nr: pomeranian

PHMowgli: rebel you toowhat breed

PHMowgli: oh cute

Rebel V_nr: vizsla

PHFang: good answer nancy...that's just what you do

PHMowgli: wow we have all groups covered tongiht lOL

Rebel V_nr: just starting out showing him....he 8 months old

PHFang: ooh how fun Rebel

Rebel V_nr: tell me about it...having a time straightining out his gait...keeps wanting to sidewind

VAL911K9: 8 mths - lots of funs with still having puppy stupid attacks

PHFang: Ok so what do you do if there's bait or a huge fluff in the ring that's distracting your dog?

PHFang: oh Rebel that can be maddening

VAL911K9: we teach a leavit it command way before going in the ring

bert_nr: Hey you can't talk about my dog like that !!

PHFang: LOL good plan Val!

Rebel V_nr: hes good on the right but change to the left and right back at it

PHMowgli: mine are not food baiters so it is not an issue for me

VAL911K9: practise at home and every place dropping food and correcting if they go for it

PHFang: HAHA sorry Bert.....a huge fluff without dog attached

VAL911K9: my problem is the fluff with a dog attatched with my one dog

PHFang: LOL Val

bert_nr: Hey that "fluff" comes in handy when teaching directed retrieve

PHMowgli: fang you can't talk about hte crappy judges that way LOL

PHFang: Rebel...what do you mean on the right?

PHFang: LOLOL Mow

Rebel V_nr: was told by some people to work with him on my right side and against a wall to straighten his gait out

PHFang: ok Rebel.....that's what I was going to suggest also LOL

nancy_nr: gee I hate food being dropped all over and had that happen and really my dog went nuts trying to get the handful of bait dropped right as you walk in the ring.

VAL911K9: also even tho I bait with food I carry a toy in case I need to up the anty to get attention

PHMowgli: reble but once a dog gets comfy working on right often it is a struggle to get them on left again

Rebel V_nr: if I work with him on the left against a wall seems the backside still likes to wonder

PHFang: Nancy, I have stopped before right in the ring to pick up the offending object be it food or fluff LOL

VAL911K9: Rebel do you allow the dog to take food off the floor at home?

PHFang: Rebel could that be age too?

PHFang: Also sometimes judges will pick up bait with distain and toss it away. But they generally all understand if you pick it up if it's distracting your dog

Rebel V_nr: well some told me its a trait with the breed too thats hard to work out...this is my first v so its new to me..

nancy_nr: this was a handful of dog food bill jack from the looks so it wasnt possible to do .I usaully pick up bait and trow it away first chance I get if i find it on the florr in ring.

PHMowgli: val yes my dogs get food off floor heck whenI cook they all watch to cath the droppings LOL

Rebel V_nr: I try to not let him scavange off the floor, but sometimes it happens

PHFang: oh yuck nancy....that's tough

PHFang: LOL Val.....this is why I have dogs...LOL for when I drop food

nancy_nr: I have grandkids try keeping the food away from dogs .LOL

VAL911K9: well mine do too- but for the first few months with puppies I try to not let them take food off the floor then when they are older it's just when I tell them "vacuum"

PHFang: lol Val

PHMowgli: ha ha val I call puppies kirby, hoover oreck etc etc etc LOL

Rebel V_nr: thats why i have a cat...shes good for scraps on the floor

VAL911K9: Rebel I have used a yard stick to tap a dog on the rear flank if they start crabbing when gaiting seems to move them back straight

Rebel V_nr: she gets there before the pup everytime

PHFang: Prolly works well with big dogs Val. Not so good for toys

Rebel V_nr: at this point Im ready to try anything...got a mock show in a couple wks and AKC show at the end of the month

PHMowgli: yeah val with our little dogs that would scare them to death LOL

VAL911K9: nope Fang but for a viszla would be ok

PHFang: I watched a lab trainer use a rod type thing to keep dogs at a sit stay....worked very well for big dogs

PHMowgli: a target stick fang

Rebel V_nr: not unless you have a pom like mine who put all my dogs in their place

PHFang: thanks Mow

VAL911K9: I always carry 2 of those telescoping pointers to use to train dogs for straight fronts also

PHFang: good idea Val.

PHFang: Might work for Rebel

PHFang: ok what other issues do we have in the ring?

VAL911K9: we use the pointer things on the toy dogs for obedience but would not use for conformation

PHMowgli: yeah val I train obedience and we use target sticks with the larger breeds

VAL911K9: I am using them with a pug right now and it's helping

VAL911K9: thanks Mow - I always forget what to call them and just tell people to get out their sticks

nancy_nr: I was told to use a stick with bait on it to help my boy get his head off the floor. it was very hard to hold clicker stick lead and train LOL

Rebel V_nr: for me Im just nervous about showing again...its been several yrs since I showed dogs and my first was a collie....have to catch up on everything

PHMowgli: nancy a target stick replaces a clicker

PHMowgli: rebel collies are very easy breed to show too

PHFang: I bet you will be fine Rebel..just like riding a bike

VAL911K9: Rebel - I always tell people don't worry what every you might do wrong has been done before and the judge will not be shocked LOL

nancy_nr: now how would that work. I was taight both I thought when I first started when dog touched stick with nose he got clicked and then the food.

PHMowgli: nancy when dog touches stick they get food you do not need to click also

PHMowgli: food is the reward rather than the click

PHMowgli: clicker training is used both with food and without however a target stick is always used with food

VAL911K9: well guys has been fun but need to call it a night - have a great evening

nancy_nr: ok maybe with the new pups i can try it if i have one as stubborn as my boy was.

VAL911K9: and thanks will be looking at the software we talked about - byeeee

PHMowgli: wait val

VAL911K9: what?

PHMowgli: we need a topic for next weeks show dog too

PHMowgli: what is your suggestion

nancy_nr: I am going to an alston seminar in sept and I hope to learn a few things there.

VAL911K9: maybe about ring manners with the judge - some judges seem shocked when I thank them now days

PHMowgli: oh nancy you will love it

PHMowgli: ok so val you want ring ettiquet

VAL911K9: or working the duel ring dog

VAL911K9: either will be good and I will try to be here

nancy_nr: I always thank the judges even if I paid for the right to do it LOL

PHFang: Agreed Val. I stopped and thanked a judge recently for being so nice with puppies. He looked at me like I'd crawled out from under a rock

PHMowgli: dueal ring and ettiquet okIhave your votes LOL

VAL911K9: yup- thats what I am talking about Fang - I want manners back
