Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” PHMowgli: alright every one brag if you got one PHMowgli: Ok well I have a brag not a huge one but a brag LOL Merlin finally after 2 wasted weekends got a qualifying score toward his CDX PHMorgan: OH - Ok - Scarlett got her 2nd CD leg with a 191 this past weekend. And reserve to a 5 point major. (ARG) PHMorgan: Tucker got reserve as well.... PHFang: whohoooo Mow! Way to go Merlin PHMorgan: SIGH PHFang: UGH sorry morgan PHMowgli: awesome Morgan Mernie: Well my male has his working dog title through the AMCA and the IWPA. My 2 year old got her AMCA working title at the age of 17 months. She had to pull 12 times her body weight at 4 different pulls. PHMorgan: wahoo, Mow! dogcaps: sniff, i don't have any brags PHMorgan: That is GREAT, Mernie PHFang: WOW Mernie! 12 times her body weight? Dang I can't do that PHMorgan: OK - GOing now PHMorgan: Night guys PHMowgli: Good job mernie PHMowgli: well you know what really pleased me about tonights brags??? sporty_nr: what PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” dogcaps: what? PHMowgli: they involved all different venues of dog showing PHFang: Hi Bassett PHFang: Yes true Mow PHMowgli: not all conformation and not just akc events it just goes to show you we all have a common interest even if they waver slightly Mernie: My male has earned 3 of his legs on his working dog excellent title- he has to pull 23 times his body weight and be in the upper 3rd percentile of his weight class. PHFang: What breed mernie? Mernie: Alaskan malamutes, my male weighs 90 lbs. - he's pulled 2,265 lbs. as his personal best in under a minute. dogcaps: brb PHMowgli: OMG mernie PHFang: Hole cow Mernie that's just incredible Mernie: My 65 lbs. bitch has pulled 1,020 lbs. bassetmom_nr: what kind of training do you have to do to get a dog to do that much weight? sporty_nr: husky/wolf or coyote PHMowgli: oh basset I did not see you literally PHMowgli: your name is not in my list LOL bassetmom_nr: its okay i am new and will prob just lurk PHFang: Feel free to chime in basset! Mernie: started out with tires and added window weights to the tire. PHMowgli: basset do you show? bassetmom_nr: i mess in the obedience ring with a basset and a clumber bassetmom_nr: not very successfully yet PHFang: well that's kewl basset Mernie: I know what you mean, my male only has 3 points on him. PHMowgli: oh great basset any brags you want to share with us maybe a qualifying round or a great down stay well pretty much anything is accepted Mernie: good for you, keep it up. Mernie: okay, shoot. PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” PHFang: hi shaggy Mernie: Hi shaggy PHFang: Does anybody here show conformation? PHMowgli: Hey shaggy sporty_nr: hi shaggy shaggydog443120: hello everybody Mernie: I do, but still learning PHMowgli: I do I do fang PHMowgli: ok where does everyone show their dogs? PHFang: Do you remember the first time in the ring Mow? PHFang: I sure do.....OY I was skert PHMowgli: OMg I was so afraid PHFang: Not sure what to do with my hands and then I needed like 12 more LOL Mernie: Mainly in Ohio. PHMowgli: I was shaking and my dog got so scared because of me and she refused to walk in the ring on leash LOL PHFang: Southeast US...Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas PHFang: LOLOL Mow PHMowgli: th ejudge must have gone over her head a million times and freaked her even more LOL Mernie: That''s okay, my first time in the ring was a fiasco! PHMowgli: that show was in Flint Michigan a huge indoor show PHFang: It was so hard at first to know when to stay in the ring and when to come out PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” PHFang: Hi Ty PHMowgli: oh eyah we took second in class and I walked out without my ribbon and the judge got real pissy LOL TyTingsMom: Hello PHFang: LOL Mow PHMowgli: but I did not know second in class got a ribbon then LOL Mernie: My bait fell out of my bait bag when I was running around the ring. PHFang: Do you show dogs Ty? shaggydog443120: awww now come on you guys you are scaring me to death PHFang: oh dang Mernie that could be bad for those behind you PHFang: It's all good shaggy :) TyTingsMom: No...sorry new to board think I am in wrong room. PHFang: Are you just getting started shaggy? Mernie: Yeah but I had nothing to bait Blade with (my male). PHMowgli: shaggy the point is we lived through it and we all realized that it was not life or death and it is just a dog show and it can be fun and no point in panicking over something so small LOL PHFang: And it's MUCH funnier now than it was then...LOL Mernie: So true! PHMowgli: oh yeah then it was not funny it was scary LOL PHFang: Thank goodness you learn to just laugh..we've all been there done that at least once Mernie: Just remeber, we all go through it at one time. PHMowgli: my most embarrasing show was when the judge told me to take my dog in a tiny circle under the canopy shaggydog443120: why did he do that? PHFang: OH heck at my very first match, I was asked to do a triangle......Oh I did one alright--BACKWARDS!!!!! lmao PHMowgli: well the canopy was only like 6x4' mind you not much room for a full size collie so I did this and the judge meant outside the canopy and got all pissy cause I did it Mernie: I was a last minute substitution, my husband hurt himself the 1st day of a 4 day show. PHFang: OH dear Mow......LOL PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” PHFang: Hi parrish PHMowgli: then to make matters worse after that my collie decided she did not like the judge and started bouncing around the ring like a dang bunny rabbit Parrish_nr: Getting started PHMowgli: hey parrish PHFang: oops parrish fell off PHFang: LOL good one Mow Mernie: I'm looking into going to handling classes. PHFang: Funny how dogs like some judges and not others at first look huh PHMowgli: what suprised me is she took reserve LOL PHFang: oh great idea Merie PHFang: Mernie PHFang: wb parrish Mernie: Yes? PHMowgli: yes handling classes are awesome for both owners and dogs sporty_nr: im bored Parrish_nr: what happened? I am kinda new at this shaggydog443120: i csn just picture that mowgli bet you were embaressed lol PHMowgli: sorry parrish you fell PHFang: sorry Mernie I misspelled your name before so I retyped it Parrish_nr: Ihahaha sporty_nr: im knew too PHMowgli: a bit shaggy PHFang: You fell off parrish....hope it didn't hurt Parrish_nr: so what does everyone show? PHMowgli: shelties here parrish PHFang: Toy Manchesters Mernie: Oh okay, I show malamutes Parrish_nr: Shelties are waaaay to smart for me shaggydog443120: C hihuahuas here PHMowgli: how about you parrish? Parrish_nr: oh oh, I need to be in the dumb dog chatroom PHFang: shaggy your avatar is one of my dogs btw...LOL Parrish_nr: I show Danes PHFang: OH kewl parrish! I love Danes shaggydog443120: sorry about my finger sliped PHMowgli: oh well danes although not the smartest dogs they have size on their side LOL Parrish_nr: are we all newbies? PHFang: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight’s Topic is “Getting Started” sporty_nr: hi PHFang: hi thorn Parrish_nr: size and big tongues!!! PHMowgli: Well Fang and I aren't parrish shaggydog443120: i am Mernie: I think pretty much. PHMowgli: hey thorn how are you tonight Mernie: Hi Thorn PHMowgli: Ok for all our new chatters any brags to share??? sporty_nr: im new at this. PHFang: Anybody want to ask newbie show questions? We can help! Parrish_nr: I took a Breed in Owensboro, KY owner handled, the second time I have ever done it shaggydog443120: fang you raise min pins? PHFang: Cuz we have been there done that! LOL sporty_nr: byebye PHFang: No shaggy that's a Toy Manchester PHMowgli: oh great Parrish congrats!!! PHFang: whohoooo congrats Parrish! Parrish_nr: that was pretty cool shaggydog443120: oooooops sorry about that Parrish_nr: (Course, I was the only special there, shhhhhh) PHFang: It's a great feeling isn't it parrish PHMowgli: so does anyone have any questions on what do to or where to go or how to fill something out or what you need to take anything at all just ask away PHFang: LOL Mernie: Yes, actually I have a handling question- how do you get a dog to run in the ring when the only place he runs is everywhere BUT the ring! Parrish_nr: I want to get better at handling, and I am curious about seminars or handling classes PHMowgli: Parrish well to start with a finished dog make it easy to get the feel of showing shaggydog443120: i do what kind of leash do you use and were do you get them? PHFang: Mernie....lots of practice..LOL PHFang: I use either a resco or small choke shaggy and I buy them at the shows PHFang: Handling classes are often a great place to learn and train your dog parrish Mernie: I have gotten some at shows, some in Cherrybrooke. PHMowgli: Mernie one of the things most handlers need to remember leave the lead slack and just begin moving and allow the dog to move behind you if that is what it takes Parrish_nr: well, the dog is trained, and I am not new, but I want to be able to compete with the big boys PHFang: Well parrish, unfortunately that will take lots of "face" time. The prof handlers are seen a lot and the judges remember them PHFang: One of the downsides to dog shows is that we stand side by side with prof handlers who spend a LOT of money to advertise their dogs etc PHMowgli: Pro handlers know which judges to show which dog under PHFang: And judges know the big handlers will bring 15-20 dogs to a show unlike owner/handlers who might bring 1-3 Mernie: He's got personality (lots of it), he just doesn't want to run in the ring. PHMowgli: and they are being paid and the more they win the more they make so they have even ore motivation that we do Parrish_nr: it just irritates me to lose because I am not known, and I really really want to never be "outhandled" PHFang: What does he do mernie? sporty_nr: hi PHFang: Yea that's the tough part of specialing parrish.....it's hard to compete with the big guns Parrish_nr: wish I had a nearly dead rich sugar daddy to back me..... PHMowgli: Parrish watch the pro's in your breed and you will see little things they do that you can emulate to make you win more I often video the pro's to pick up tips PHFang: You might have the better dog, but the prof handler is "known" and will often win becuase of that in the specials ring PHFang: LOL me too parrish..if you find one, see if he has a brother Parrish_nr: hahaha, Mernie: I drags behind like we are moving too slow for him, he doesn't extend his rear legs like he should. PHFang: I like to watch the pros in the groups parrish to pick up tips PHMowgli: Fang you are married so Parrish send him my way LOL Parrish_nr: ha...now, we will have to learn to share LOL PHFang: Mernie.......I often buddy walk my kids with older, seasoned dogs to give them the confidence to move out PHFang: dang Mow..details details PHMowgli: Parrish tell ya what just get 1 major rich guy to back us all LOL PHFang: say there's a thought Mow PHFang: [img id=em-5] Parrish_nr: you know, the ruff thing is: all that money and for what? Ranking..... Mernie: He's confident outside the ring, just not where it counts- in the ring. PHFang: Yes Parrish exactly Parrish_nr: hard to justify PHMowgli: yep parrish but it is something we must enjoy or we would not keep going back LOL shaggydog443120: well i guess i'm shot down before i even get started [img id=em-2] PHFang: That's hard to instill Mernie....confidence in the ring. it can come with time/age Parrish_nr: we are nuts PHFang: na shaggy we're talking specials here...not class dogs PHMowgli: shaggy why is that? Parrish_nr: Mernie, do you take your dog to handling classes anywhere? Parrish_nr: where you can take him in the ring and just "play" so he will know it is fun? Mernie: no just masochistic tendencies! PHMowgli: shaggy we are talking about dogs who are already champions like the dogs at westminster PHMowgli: even matches are great way to get a dog more confident shaggydog443120: oh ok sorry i miss understood Parrish_nr: Oh, Shaggy, don't feel that way, Mernie: No not yet, I just heard of ones that have different judges every week. PHMowgli: plus we are relaxed at matches so dogs tend ot relax and show off more till we all get confident PHFang: true Mow.......and seriously buddy walking the less confident ones have given my dogs tremendous confidence. Esp if I can walk them near the rings like during groups Parrish_nr: in the classes it is not as hard, really! PHMowgli: in the classes you can get a pretty fair share in most breeds PHFang: shaggy unless you are into dobes, almost anybody can owner/handle a dog to obtain it's championship PHMowgli: what breed do you have shaggy? shaggydog443120: Chihuahua PHFang: oh shaggy, you can owner/handle your dog then PHMowgli: oh well see chi's are failry easy to get started PHFang: It's not that cut throat in chis Parrish_nr: and in the classes, you are usually just competing against a few....and if you win the class, it is a big help to boost your confidence PHMowgli: chi's are one of the best breeds for owner handlers PHFang: right parrish PHMowgli: yep and of course you have to get a quilt full of reserves when you first start out it is a rule LOL Mernie: What's funny is my little red & white mal bitch who has yet to go into the ring has the show attitude down pat. Parrish_nr: in fact, I think it is fun just to beat ANYbody...third out of four is sometimes enough!!!! PHMowgli: yes parrish it is LOL shaggydog443120: i have been told that chis are natural show offs PHFang: yes at times parrish it sure is PHMowgli: it is our competitive spirit PHFang: yes shaggy they are very showy PHFang: do you have a long hair or smooth coat chi shaggy? PHMowgli: Ok who else has enough reserve ribbons to make a quilt? shaggydog443120: smooth PHFang: Good, shaggy then grooming is easy! lol Parrish_nr: me me, I am gonna make wallpaper outta reserve ribbons Mernie: I have enough for a coupple of pillows at least. Parrish_nr: They are the "kiss your brother" award
PHFang: Oh Sorry Mow....I don't have many reserves.....
PHFang: Best of Losers........LOL
Parrish_nr: hahaha, that's funny
PHMowgli: ok well I just bought this really nice rope and I know a nice tree we can use to hang PHFang from LOL
shaggydog443120: he is a chocolate with a perfect white diamond on his neck thus he earned the name Diamond Jim Beedy
MiniSch_nr: I think I have enough reserve ribbons to make a quilt.
Mernie: I'm envious! It takes me an hour to get Blade ready for show.
PHFang: [img id=em-5]
PHFang: LOL thanx Mow
PHMowgli: ha an hour it takes me 3 weeks
PHMowgli: try showing long coated breeds LOL
Mernie: That's just bushing him out!
PHFang: OH geez I am really gonna need the flame suit now.....including toenails and whiskers it takes me MAYBE 20 mins
PHMowgli: who are smarter than the judges LOL
PHMowgli: PHMowgli is now tieing the rope into a noose
PHFang: LMAO Mow.......sorry!! I like my short coated dogs for a reason
shaggydog443120: oh oh fang better run
PHFang: yup shaggy you'd better run with me with your chis
PHMowgli: yeah we will get shaggy next LOL
MiniSch_nr: We start stripping 12 weeks before the show we want to enter with most miniature schnauzers.
PHFang: EWW stripping....now that's a nightmare
shaggydog443120: ok ready lets go!!!!!!!!
MiniSch_nr: And the day of the show it takes be about 1 1/2 hours a dog to get them ready to go in the ring.
PHMowgli: well then see mini is with me LOL
PHFang: So what is your favorite bait?
Mernie: WOW!!!
MiniSch_nr: I really like "Great Bait"
PHFang: My special is sooo picky. One day he wants cheese, the next day no he wants hot dogs
shaggydog443120: chicken my dogs love chicken
PHMowgli: well peanuts work for all my dogs
PHFang: I have to pack a smorgasboard of bait for my boy
PHFang: ugh
PHFang: or he will patooey it in the ring
PHMowgli: yes my dogs work for peanuts LOL
Mernie: Homemade liver, haven't tried chicken. String cheese sometimes.
PHFang: He also seems to prefer anything the person next to me has.......LOL
PHMowgli: but beef jerky is a good standy for most dogs
Parrish_nr: if you need something to really motivate, use braunsweiger
PHMowgli: and popcorn is a good one somedays
Parrish_nr: liver cheese.....
PHFang: I wondered about that parrish, but it's soo gooey
PHFang: I hate anything gooey in my hands/pocket
Mernie: How do you keep the braunsweiger from getting all over your hands?
PHMowgli: see my dogs will only bait for something I am eating LOL
PHFang: Tried that also Mow......but it only works sometimes for him
PHMowgli: so I eat the peanuts and they get 1 or 2 to keep focus on me LOL
Parrish_nr: you keep freeze dried liver in a bag with a dab of it in the bag
PHFang: And how does that dry out the liverwurst parrish?
PHMowgli: fang you do not feed the liverwurst only the liver
PHFang: Oh.........I R stuid.....LOL
PHFang: stupid even
PHFang: and can't type
PHMowgli: must be contagious LOL
PHFang: LOL
Mernie: Me too!!!
PHMowgli: ok what is your favorite type of show?
PHMowgli: all breed, specialty, indoor , outdoor
PHMowgli: I prefer outdoor all breed shows myself
Mernie: all breed, outdoor.
PHMowgli: my dogs seem more relaxed and do better
PHMowgli: Mernie you show in Ohio right?
PHFang: all breed indoor (it's danged hot in the south)
Mernie: Yes.
shaggydog443120: i don't know what is the best one for a beginer?
PHMowgli: have you ever gone to columbus shows those are a nightmare
PHFang: Small shows with small entries shaggy
PHFang: IMO
PHMowgli: shaggy I like to start at small shows myself
PHMowgli: or matches and work up to larger shows
Mernie: I've been to a couple, hated Canfield worse- they don't take care of their grounds.
PHMowgli: the cleveland classic is nice but crowded
Mernie: Yep, I live 20 minutes away from Cleveland.
Parrish_nr: Sorry, got distracted....no, the liverwurst just flavors the rest of the dried stuff,....it has been a godsend for me'
shaggydog443120: i live in Akron Ohio does any one know of any shows close to ther?
PHMowgli: Cobo Hall in Detroit is awful all that time wasted in benching area
PHMowgli: shaggy lots of shows
PHFang: Thanks for the tip shaggy I will try it......I love liverwurst.....LOL Maybe I will try drying some
PHMowgli: Ohio is full of shows
PHMowgli: http://www.infodog.com
PHMowgli: shaggy go there and do a search by state and find the shows you can go to
Mernie: During the summer, there seems like there's one every weekend.
shaggydog443120: ok thanks mowgli
PHMowgli: isn't there one in Toledo this coming weekend Mernie?
Mernie: I love liverwurst too, I'm going to have a hard time keeping me and my husband from eating it.
PHFang: LOL maybe I should make Beau a liverwurst sandwich
PHMowgli: Mernie I like it too and I do eat it and my dogs get it at home if they are training but I never took to a show cause it is so messy LOL
Mernie: I believe so, I know Canfield is at the end of the month.
PHMowgli: Bobbie Jo actually had liverwurst on rye bread tonight after agility training LOL
PHFang: At least the bread would keep my fingers from getting so gooey....LOL imagine standing in the ring eating a sandwich in front of your dog.....LOL
PHMowgli: hey my dogs would bait for it but I bet the judes would get mad LOL
PHFang: Well heck, we eat their bait alll the time....LOL
Mernie: I hear the Canadian and UKC show are great, any one have any expierences?
PHMowgli: specially when you say just a sec I need a drink LOL

PHMowgli: well isn't everything you can fit essential LOL
PHFang: LOLOL yea! In reality all you REALLY need is dog, bait and leash....but what else
Mernie: Although, wouldn't it be different for each breed?
PHFang: I would think so Mernie
PHMowgli: but yes great idea and I also have some great links on how to build some of the items we will discuss and I will post the links as they apply
PHFang: But when you are just getting started it's hard to know what you are really going to need
