Transcript: Dog Breeding Chat Tuesday, March 15, 2005: Training Tools and Getting Your Dog Ring-Ready PHMowgli: hey tsn Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight's Topic: Training Tools: What to use to get your dog ring ready!!! TanBrae: Let me put it this way... PHChristy: so for an individual dog you cannot predict, but you can predict for a litter or a line PHMowgli: hi cinnamire Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight's Topic: Training Tools: "What to use to get your dog ring ready!!! TanBrae: If I had a comparable dog, and his hips were good or excellent, I would use him instead. AnnZ3_nr: The breeder where I got my girl had suggested this stud but I think it was before everyone knew he was fair cinnamire: Hello there! mastador: Isn't it all about breeding the best to the best anyway???? TanBrae: Oops, we are switching topics? TanBrae: Sorry! AnnZ3_nr: I was going to call someone else...then she returned my e-mail..I'm so new if I back out I'm afraid I'll be erin_nr: hello, who are we talking about? TanBrae: Ann, I'd call your breeder again and ask what he/she thinks of that stud now.
PHChristy: yes, actually it is showdog chat now
PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight's Topic: Training Tools: What to use to get your dog ring ready!!!
AnnZ3_nr: well, it gets worse
TanBrae: Good luck to you. And, remember, this is only MY opinion.
AnnZ3_nr: ok
PHMowgli: ok who has a favorite training tool they use to prep all their show prospects?
TanBrae: Ring ready! Oooo, I love showing dogs!
PHChristy: prayer is my best tool
TanBrae: TREATS!
PHChristy: just desparate prayer that they won't embarrass me LOL
TanBrae: LOL @ Christy!
PHMowgli: I myslef love my table with tuna cans on it LOL
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: he he christy that is one of mine also LOL
TanBrae: HEY! Mowgli! I am always telling my students to use tuna cans!
PHChristy: ok folks, goodnight and enjoy your chat... I hope to see you in Dog Breeding chat next week! goodnight!
TanBrae: They all want to go out and pay boucoup bucks on that stupid contraption.
TanBrae: Happy legs!
PHMowgli: often we have dogs who want to move those feet tuna cans make them feel firm footed but if they move them the foot is over air so they learn to keep feet in placce
cinnamire: anyone have any recommendations for those dogs that loose their zest for showing...those that get ring savy and start getting bored
PHMowgli: Happy legs can be made at home with a can or equal cut blocks of 4x4 wood
TanBrae: Yep, and much more cheaply than the actual product.
PHMowgli: cinnamire I like to keep my kids loving showing by making it special and different at every show
TanBrae: cinnamire, sometimes letting somebody else show the dog can help.
PHMowgli: they always get a prize!!! I buy a little dog toy or treat or a can of sardines and my dogs get that after they finish the show
PHMowgli: that way they look forward to showing for that special prize they get everytime
PHMowgli: WB Tan
mastador: wb tb
TanBrae: Clicked the wrong button!
mastador: it hppens
TanBrae: *blonde*
TanBrae: Thanks!
mastador: see????
PHMowgli: smoked fish is a great bait too and rarely used
cinnamire: I have tried letting someone else show her, and that seems to get her more interested.
TanBrae: Oh, I gave a friend's Papillion smoked fish once because it was all I had. Gave him MAJOR squirts!
PHMowgli: it really gets them to work again
PHMowgli: Tan my dogs eat fish once a week
TanBrae: cinnamire, it can work because the dog doesn't know what they are going to do.
TanBrae: Mowgli, our dogs do, too.
TanBrae: They love it!
TanBrae: So, did my post about ringside make it or did I click out before I sent it?
TanBrae: *doink*
PHMowgli: I have never had a problem with diareah from smoked fish and I do see great results for baiting with it if used sparingly and only when they start to lag
PHMowgli: we missed it tan
cinnamire: That's exactly why she's more animated when with someone else...she doesn't know what they are going to do...are they going to give her the cookie???
TanBrae: Okay.
PHMowgli: cinnamire you need to change you handling routine for her
TanBrae: I said that if you don't pay attention to them ringside (other than keeping an eye on them so they don't get in trouble or harm), then, when you get in the ring, "play" with them...
TanBrae: it can help make them less "bored".
TanBrae: Keep them guessing.
PHMowgli: yes Tan also if you have someone else groom them prior to going in ring them pass them off to you they are thrilled to see MOM and really show off for you
TanBrae: Use different kinds of treats, different toys.
TanBrae: Yes, that works, too!
cinnamire: Good ideas...
TanBrae: And, if you don't get happy to see them until you get in the ring...
PHMowgli: change things around make it always different and fun
TanBrae: Smile!
TanBrae: YOU should have fun, too!
TanBrae: If it is a chore for you, or you are nervous, the dog will know.
PHMowgli: also even if they do not place praise them and tell them how great they did make them feel like they won BIS
TanBrae: Right!
cinnamire: I've tried alot of what's being mentioned, but she's a pretty smart cookie. ;)
TanBrae: Remember, YOU get to go home with the dog!
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: what breed cinna?
cinnamire: Labradors
PHMowgli: the best prize of all Tan
TanBrae: Thought I recognized your name.
cinnamire: I thought it was you also...
TanBrae: :-)
PHMowgli: cinna lots of competition in labs so you need to be relaxed and that is hard on a handler try chewing gum before going in ring
TanBrae: If you were showing a male, I'd say take a tissue and wipe a bitch in season.
cinnamire: Off topic, but thanks for maintaining the Optigen site.
TanBrae: Hey, thanks!
TanBrae: It's fun.
TanBrae: Learning lots!
TanBrae: *can't remember half of it, though*
berta: Well I'm off to bed..... nite all
TanBrae: Do you practice at home or in classes?
TanBrae: 'night Berta.
PHMowgli: does anyone have a favorite type of leash or collar for showing?
PHMowgli: nite berta
TanBrae: My fave are loop leads.
cinnamire: Actually I relax and enjoy myself...just wish I could get her more animated
TanBrae: I really like the kangahides.
cinnamire: Home
PHMowgli: I like leather for my breed and I prefer martingales
TanBrae: Don't practice any more for a while.
TanBrae: Loops and slip collars.
TanBrae: I usually use nylon - the kangas are pricey.
PHMowgli: cinnamire maybe if you don't practice for a week prior to show that will make it more fun and special for her
TanBrae: I use chains on anybody that is "wild".
cinnamire: We haven't practiced in a loonggg time....she's an old hat at knowing what to do, just not animated. She's 5
PHMowgli: I have shelties tan not much pulling or tugging from them LOL
TanBrae: LOL
TanBrae: I have to admit - once used a prong on a Newf.
PHMowgli: cinnamire I have a 9 yr old collie bitch here that knows how to show she does not need a handler anymore she can do it herself
TanBrae: I was nervous the whole time in the ring that the judge would find it out.
PHMowgli: tan you handle pro?
TanBrae: I "handle", not pro, though.
PHMowgli: ok just friends and such
TanBrae: I've handled: Labs (of course!), Newfs, giant schnauzers, mini schnauzers, Dobes, shar peis, min pins, collies,
TanBrae: Well, I get paid.
PHMowgli: yes I do too but I do not advertise as a pro handler I just do it for friends and aquatiances
TanBrae: But, it really is hard to break into it to do professionally unless you can get a really good dog with a client who is willing and able to PAY!
TanBrae: And, if you are not already "known"...
TanBrae: [img id=em-4]
PHMowgli: yes and you have to be able to travle year round which I cannot
TanBrae: Yep.
TanBrae: cinna, have you tried "ignoring" your bitch in the ring?
TanBrae: Sort of make her want you to pay her attention?
PHMowgli: I can't go to where the big points are just to show a dog I have 23 of my own to care for so I hit weekend shows here in state and do a bit for others
cinnamire: Can't say I've done that...
TanBrae: 23!!!
TanBrae: Wow, and I think 7 is plenty to care for!
PHMowgli: 22 shelties and 1 smooth collie
TanBrae: LOL
TanBrae: Oh, wow!@
TanBrae: cinna, you might give it a try.
TanBrae: Have somebody else hold her ringside, take her in, ignore her except for when the judge is looking at her.
PHMowgli: Tan 13 are over 10 yrs old and old retired kids
TanBrae: Awe, the seniors are the best, aren't they?
TanBrae: Special places in the heart.
cinnamire: I'll have to try it some time
PHMowgli: yeah but of course now they are starting to have ahces and pains
TanBrae: Hey, Barbaree!
PHMowgli: hey barbaree Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight's Topic: Training Tools what to use to get your dog ring ready!!!
cinnamire: Linda?
Barbaree: Hi, yes....Linda
cinnamire: Hello...it's Renee
PHMowgli: Oh yes I almost forgot anyone have any brags to share this week???
TanBrae: My bitch came back OFA Excellent! LOL
Barbaree: Hi Renee
cinnamire: Congrats!
TanBrae: Don't have anything of my own to show at the moment.
TanBrae: Thanks!

TanBrae: April for me, too.
TanBrae: Taking a couple Welshies out.
PHMowgli: well I should say none i can get too living way ypp north in the boonies
Barbaree: April seems to be everyone's "new year"
TanBrae: Really? Where?
TanBrae: Up North
TanBrae: MN?
PHMowgli: I am in Northern Michigan
TanBrae: Ah.
TanBrae: My bitch comes from Flint.
TanBrae: Brrrr!
PHMowgli: are you in MN?
TanBrae: IA.
TanBrae: Middle of nowhere.
PHMowgli: Flint is 2 hrs south of me LOL
TanBrae: 11 East of me!
TanBrae: Loonng drive.
cinnamire: Goodnight all. Thanks!
TanBrae: Hey, cinna, good luck with your bitch!
Barbaree: I'm 11 hrs. from Flint in the othere direction
cinnamire: Thanks Tan
TanBrae: Hope to meet you at a specialty some time.
TanBrae: Oops, missed her.
PHMowgli: yeah I drove to North West Wisconsin to get one of my bitches 9 hrs one way that was rough
PHMowgli: nite cinna
TanBrae: Did you show your smooth?
PHMowgli: so was this weeks chat posted to a lab board?
TanBrae: We started out with collies. I got tired of the hair.
PHMowgli: yes I did she got her championship finally at age 4
TanBrae: I saw it on a couple Lab forums.
Barbaree: So did I
PHMowgli: well we are here every week
TanBrae: LOL, not that Lab hair is much better.
TanBrae: Cool!
TanBrae: I didn't know about this until it was posted.
Barbaree: just shorter, unless you have a smooth Collie
PHMowgli: and we let the chatters choose the topics so just let me know if you want to discuss anything in particular
TanBrae: I love to talk shows.
PHMowgli: Welcome to Show Dog Chat!! Tonight's Topic: Training Tools: What to use to get your dog ring ready!!!
TanBrae: Showing dogs is the only form of competition I really enjoy.
PHMowgli: hi aysel
Aysel: hey Mowgli!
TanBrae: Hi aysel.
PHMowgli: me too tan
Aysel: hey TanBrae
PHMowgli: ad of course fighting nature to breed the perfect dog LOL
TanBrae: LOL
TanBrae: Ooooh, breeding....
TanBrae: Scares me.
Barbaree: Afraid this will be short lived for me. Dogs are asking to go for last outs and DH just got home....groan
TanBrae: I made a mess of the only Lab litter I bred. The collies were a bit easier.
PHMowgli: it is always a crap shoot but I enjoy it
TanBrae: Sorry you are leaving so soon, Barbaree.
PHMowgli: oh darn Barbaree maybe you can come back again and stay longer
PHMowgli: aysel what breed do you have?
TanBrae: Aysel, what is your breed?
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: GMTA LOL
TanBrae: Are erin and cascada still here?
PHMowgli: Tan did you see we have message boards here too and we break them down by breed
TanBrae: No, I didn't. I'll have to check that out, thanks.
PHMowgli: cascada is here but just reading I do not know about erin
TanBrae: I've only been here once for Hutch's seminar.
Aysel: I have an American Bulldog, Tan
TanBrae: Cool!
Aysel: she is spayed, because she was my first in the breed and not from a reputable breeder
erin_nr: I'm here but on the phone, pardon me
TanBrae: They are such clowns!
PHMowgli: oh Dr. Hutch is great
TanBrae: He's the best!
Aysel: I wasn't even going to try and wait and see how she was going to turn out
TanBrae: Great seminars!
Aysel: now I sometimes wish I did, because her conformation is pretty nice
Aysel: except for her bite
TanBrae: Have you shown before?
Aysel: which is a bit too undershot
Aysel: no, my mother has... and I know several breeders that I train with
Aysel: SOME DAY I would like to get a Vizsla to show :)
PHMowgli: Aysel so you are just getting started yourself?
TanBrae: I have never shown a bulldog before, but I once gave one best in match.
TanBrae: VERY nice bitch!
PHMowgli: http://forums.doghobbyist.com/forum.php?catid=114
PHMowgli: that is the lab board
TanBrae: Thanks, Mowgli!
Aysel: I am in college right now, and don't have much time to pursue showing
Aysel: but later I would like to
PHMowgli: oh aysel what is your major?
Aysel: I know the secretary of the VCA
TanBrae: School is important.
Aysel: I am majoring in Biotechnology
PHMowgli: http://forums.doghobbyist.com/forum.php?catid=66 the bulldog board aysel if you are interested
TanBrae: Gotta make a living!
Aysel: lol, oops!
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: oh that is a great field aysel
TanBrae: Wow! Interesting field.
Aysel: I post on the American Bulldog board
Aysel: but it has been very very sluggish lately!
PHMowgli: by the way to post your type you can just hit enter rather than using the send button
TanBrae: What would you like to do after you get out of college?
Aysel: American Bulldog is not to be confused with the English Bully ;-)
PHMowgli: less likey to kick your self out with enter key LOL
TanBrae: Americans are larger.
TanBrae: Taller,
Aysel: I turned off my popup blocker and it reset chat on me
TanBrae: not quite as "squat".
PHMowgli: ah ok
Aysel: they look like a completely different dog
Aysel: there are the "bully" types of AB's
Aysel: but I'm not a huge fan of those
Aysel: because people tend to mutilate them through breeding
TanBrae: Yeah. Look what they did with the English type.
Aysel: es
TanBrae: Can't breed or whelp naturally.
Aysel: yes*
PHMowgli: too many breeders of all breeds wat bigger and braoder dogs and they are destroying their breeds
Aysel: http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/2133sophiestackdec132004.jpg
Aysel: that's my girl
TanBrae: Oh, good thing the other Lab people aren't here!
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: I even saw an ad for rare old time block head labs which look like a cross with a shar pei to me
TanBrae: LMBO
Aysel: labs?
Aysel: that's crazy
TanBrae: "rare"???
TanBrae: LMBO
TanBrae: Oiy!
Aysel: I've seen poorly bred labs that look very leggy and fine boned
PHMowgli: I know aysel it was funny yet scary for the breed
TanBrae: Our standard says "moderate" and "medium" many times.
Aysel: but never at the other extremem!
Aysel: extreme*
TanBrae: I don't understand what people don't understand about "moderate" and "medium".
TanBrae: But, that is another topic!
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: oh aysel pretty girl
Aysel: head study http://gallery.pethobbyist.com/data/2133sophhead.gif
Aysel: thanks mowgli! :)
TanBrae: I'm on dial up, so it's still loading for me.
PHMowgli: tan I agree our standard is the same moderate medium and we get huge ole monsters that look like they are part aussie in the rings and the sad part is often those dogs win at shows
PHMowgli: me too aysel on the second pic still loading
TanBrae: I know. I have a friend who is trying desperately to find a male she likes.
Aysel: you have Shelties, right mowgli?
TanBrae: She keeps complaining about the "horses" she sees in the ring.
PHMowgli: yes aysel
TanBrae: Pretty girl, aysel!
Aysel: The thing with AB's is that it is such a dynamic breed
Aysel: and still evolving
Aysel: thanks, Tan!
PHMowgli: tan I say the same thing about my breed LOL
TanBrae: Love her head profile.
Aysel: what breed do you have, Tan?
TanBrae: Mowgli, I'm talking shelties, sorry!
TanBrae: I have Labs.
Aysel: in the stack, Tan?
TanBrae: Yes.
Aysel: thanks :)
TanBrae: She's got a nice profile in that picture.
Aysel: Someone I showed her stack to said that that was a perfect head
Aysel: haha, made me beam a bit :E
TanBrae: My friend is trying to find a sheltie stud.
TanBrae: [img id=em-5]
Aysel: oy, smilies aren't working
TanBrae: ??? I see them.
Aysel: did you see that grinning smiley for me?
PHMowgli: oh tan want to see one of my boys?
TanBrae: Sure!
Aysel: I see yours, but not mine
TanBrae: Yep, I see both smilies.
TanBrae: Mowgli, what color is he?
Aysel: hm. odd
TanBrae: Before you post the link.
PHMowgli: http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=4286273061&idx=6
PHMowgli: this guy here is a bi-blue
TanBrae: Okay, before I look!
TanBrae: Oooo, my fave!
TanBrae: I love blue in any breed!
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: is there another color you want to see I have them all LOL
Aysel: aw you have to sign in to look at the pictures
TanBrae: Well, with 22 of them....
Aysel: I'm not a member
TanBrae: I'm sure you have several of each!
Aysel: you have 22 dogs?
Aysel: big kennel!
PHMowgli: no yo ushouldn't have too aysel it should show still
TanBrae: Pretty face.
PHMowgli: I have a 32x52 kennel building with indoor outoor runs heated and air conditioned
Aysel: nice!
Aysel: I don't think I would ever be able to have a large kennel like that
Aysel: I don't even know if I would be able to breed
TanBrae: Looks like he moves straight.
Aysel: sooo much responsibility
PHMowgli: http://www.imagestation.com/album/pictures.html?id=4286273061&slideshow=1
PHMowgli: try that link
Aysel: says "You Must Sign In to View This Album"
Aysel: what the hell, i'll just join
TanBrae: LOL
PHMowgli: he does tan he is actually a very gorgeous dog that pic was tken a yr ago and he is only 2 now LOL
TanBrae: Wow!
TanBrae: Looks very mature there.
PHMowgli: well aysel try signingin using the name Bryna with password shelties
Aysel: LMAO
Aysel: looks like I already signed up for that many moons ago!
TanBrae: Looks like he has plenty of bone, but not overdone.
PHMowgli: my boys mature young but it stays with for life
Aysel: hello Rebel
TanBrae: That's great!
PHMowgli: hey reble
PHMowgli: Tan he is moderate LOL
RebelV: HI everyone
Aysel: that's a LOT of hair, Mow!!
Aysel: lol
Aysel: I like Donovan :E
PHMowgli: now if you gothrough the album you will see keeby he is a bit fine on bone but he is gret for thoe heavy boned bitches we see today
TanBrae: That hair is why I don't do collies any more.
PHMowgli: aysel donovan and merlin were in a stud fight today and both are being punished right now LOL
Aysel: awww
Aysel: darn boys
PHMowgli: their grandma is in heat and they seem to think they should breed her not going to happen
TanBrae: Whoa! 10:00! Time to feed the zoo.
