Witty book offers solution to canine mysteries

Cats are supposed to be the mysterious pets, but dogs offer their share of secrets, too. Stepping into the role of canine mystery-solvers are “Good Morning, America” veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker and pet-care columnist Gina Spadafori, with a book no dog-lover should be without: Why Do Dogs Drink Out of the Toilet?: 101 of the Most Perplexing Questions Answered About Canine Conundrums, Medical Mysteries and Befuddling Behaviors. (HCI; $12.95).

The book is more that its catchy title suggests, though. The answers to the 101 questions of the title come from the expertise not only of two top pet experts but also dozens of the best specialists in every imaginable field of canine expertise. And the authors write with wit and obvious love for their subject.

From A (Anatomy) to Z (Zoonotic diseases), it’s hard to imagine a book that packs more solid information in such a fun and entertaining format, without ever straying far from a good light read that will have any pet-lover laughing. This is an extraordinary little book every dog-lover must have, and it’s perfectly timed as a gift for the canine fans on any holiday list.

If you’ve ever wondered why dogs love disgusting smells … how Guide Dogs know when the light is green … why some neutered dogs need Viagra and much, much more, you’ll love this book.

So why do dogs drink out of the toilet? Because the water’s changed more often than in a dog dish, for one thing. Dr. Becker and Ms. Spadafori will have to tell you the rest.

The pair have also written a feline companion book, Do Cats Always Land on Their Feet? 101 of the Most Perplexing Questions Answered About Feline Unfathomables, Medical Mysteries and Befuddling Behaviors. It’s just as highly recommended.
