I bought this book when I was at my wits end with an 8 month old White German Shepherd puppy I "rescued". I had been around dogs all my life and thought I "knew" how to handle a dog and make him happy. On no I didn't! The day the book came, I sat down and read it cover to cover while my better half took our rambunctious Pup for 3 walks up and around the BIG hill at the Canyon dog park. By the time the boys came home, I felt as if somebody had handed me the Mayan Codex or the Rosetta Stone! I finally "got it".
Since dogs speak to us with their bodies as much as their utterances, Coren's helpful illustrations of the body language he is referring to in a given chapter are essential references for both new and experienced dog people. You'll soon be able to tell goofy playful from sneakily trying to dominate things. He also weaves some wonderfully loving and reassuring information throughout his examples of each type of dog communication. I especially loved something he said at the end about the sound of a dog breathing in the night - I don't want to wreck it for you by relating it in total.
Bottom line - Stanley Coren knows what dogs are saying and he can teach you to know it too. He doesn't have a hip show on NatGeo or any gimmicky maneuvers, lines of dog collars or sparely leashes. He just has plenty of love for dogs and their people and a desire to bring them together in "conversation".
Very informative and interesting!
